Relocating this summer
Thanks for the advice. I think I might do ILS, I'm just waiting on a quote from them including the registration and all that jazz. I will definitely take tons of pictures of the car before shipping it. It has a few bumps and has been well loved, so I don't think it will qualify for insurance, but I will definitely make sure to do my due diligence before shipping.
Also, thanks for letting me know about the Bill of Lading. I didn't know about that step of the process. I have contacted PGU for an insurance quote and will be calling St. John Insurance too.
All of these things are making my move seem so much more real. I'm counting the days and it's only a little more than a month away!
You can figure some of the costs on your own. Road tax is 16¢ per pound of the car. You can probably find out how much your car weighs by doing a VIN search online. You will have to pay duty if the car is foreign made, 3.5% of the value I believe. If it's US made, you pay nothing.
Here is a quote I received on a $2,900 Subaru to get it road ready from ILS

Ocean freight from MIA to STT was $1,350- 3 days time. From JAX to STT $1,400-10 days time.
You will need to get a VI driver's license if you are here more than 90 days. Get a copy of your driving record right before you move down just to make it easier. You will need that when you get your license here.
Not related to this whatsoever, but just because it popped in my head, filing personal taxes here is a bit different as well. Our federal taxes are held/paid locally to the VIBIR (Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue). So as soon as you start making money while you live here, you will need to pay here. And we don't have E-file for VIBIR....you have to do it the old fashion way by mailing or going into the office. Almost everyone I know hand delivers their taxes to the offices and gets a stamped copy as well. It's the only real way to cover your butt. They are pretty bad about losing things.
Thanks! I just requested my driving record online. Going to the RMV in Massachusetts was enough of a pain in the rear end, I want my move to go as smoothly as possible.
Also, thanks for the advice on the taxes. I don't even wanna think about what kind of headache that's gonna be.
On a side note, I know other people have posted about cell phone carriers and what is the best option. I read on many of those posts that AT&T was the best. However, in speaking with someone at a branch today, they mentioned that if you use a "Go Phone" down in the USVI too much they kick you off? Has anyone heard of that happening? I currently have Verizon and am trying to figure out what to do b/c I don't want to lose my phone number that I've had for 15 years. Anyone have any researched suggestions about carriers? Are there any down there that I could use?
I have had no problem using an ATT gophone.
I haven't heard that about the GoPhones. They sell them here in the VI and I know quite a few people who use them. At&t and Sprint are the main carriers. Innovative/Choice now Viya also offers cellular service. I'd say that At&t is by far the preferred.
Ok, thanks for reaffirming what I was thinking about the phones. I figured that the guy at the AT&T store was misinformed.
When I switched carriers from innovative to AT&T I was able to keep my phone number. You may be able to do the same.
