Are there any buses that go from Red Hook to Charlotte Amalie? If so how often do they run and how reliable are they?

You can hop on a Safari bus for $3 from Red Hook and it will drop you off at the bus stop right in CA They come by quite frequently. If you are looking for public transportation like the VI Trans bus I wouldn't know that answer.

Where do you find these safari buses? I'm moving to STT in a month and will be working in Charlotte Amalie, and am trying to figure out if a commute from Red Hook would be feasible.

They look like the open air tourist bus. the cab is usually a big pick up, then the trailer is a 6 row open air seating with a cover. Some taxies try to resemble them so you have to ask if you are new. They drive the main road around the island. I dropped my daughter off from American Yacht Harbor in Red Hook to get to the airport when she visited me on the boat. We did a dry run the day before so I could show her what they looked like. When we walked up to the road, the first vehicle that came up and dropped people off in front of us was the Safari bus. I have taken the bus from Red Hook to CA a couple times when on the boat. You press a buzzer just like a bus so he can stop at the next bus stop.

They run a circular route from CA to Red Hook. You can easily pick up in Red Hook on the street by the ferry dock and then by Ft. Christian in CA, or by the Vendor Tents near Emancipation Park.

As someone said, they look like taxis so be careful which you stop. Actually, they are identical in markings as they are taxis. They are pretending to be buses and the law allows them to do so since the bus system, which does exist, is not that great. They charge $2 from RH to town and vice versa. Around the town area it is $1. When you see them coming, you point to the ground to stop them, and as said before, there is a buzzer to tell them when to stop so you can get off. No conversation is necessary between you and the driver. Just hand them the dollar or two. If you ask them funny or rate questions, they will then know you are a tourist and charge you taxi rates. The best rule of thumb to follow when looking for one, is to grab one that is filled with local folk. When you see tourists on board, say no thanks!

Thanks everyone. One more question--at what time do the buses start and stop running?
