ok, let me see if I have this straight. Based on the VI Daily News today:

Red Hook temporary parking lot is on government land.
VI Port Authority paid $ to construct parking lot.
VI Port Authority pays $ to install and monthly bill for parking lot lights.

Taxi Association has a lock on managing the lot AND transporting people to/from dock.

Taxi pays Port Authority $5,250/month to make $ on the lot
Taxi Association gets $7/day/vehicle (parking, shuttle to/from dock)

If you estimate 100 vehicles/day, that's ~$20K/month. That's around 70% profit. How sweet. I'm starting to think Marty's insight to the taxi business is ....well.....insightful.

Well, I'm not sure where they/you got such information, and I'm here to tell you that I haven't seen 100 vehicles parked in this new "lot" that took about 4 months to sort of come together! People apprear to be walking to pick up their vehicles and not taking taxi service that I have seen anyway.

Not to worry, Red Hook Ferry dock will be all the better for this improvement that is years overdue.

Sit tight.........all will work out.

The first day there were 3 cars parked there. Maybe you should redo the math!! Will take a count tomorrow when I head over to STJ.

Right. There were only a few cars in the picture in the lot - I'm not there so now am walking the tightrope making observations that I should not be making. I was counting the cars lined up on the road where they're supposedly not allowed to park. Thinking that if they do make those cars part in the designated spot, it would be financially gratifying for the taxi assoc.

I'm on the rock only a couple of months at a time each year. I'm reminding myself now that I should shut up and learn from you guys instead of making blind incindiary observations.

I do look forward to the improvements!

Seven cars there at 10:15 this morning. Ten cars parked at 4:05 this afternoon! Loads of cars on the street!

Not sure I get the point here???????????

Issue is NOT about the taxi service but rather about positive development for Red Hook.

Doing something about the jumble of cars and broken fence that represented a major jumping off place to other islands, for many visitors to our island, was one of the very first things I posted about..........over a year and a half ago.

At that time I was told, not to worry, the Enighed Pond project on STJ, also included plans for the ferry dock in Red Hook.

Ok, so now it's begun...........can anyone send me to a reference that will show me what the finished dock is supposed to look like?
A new shop owner in the newly created shops parallel and across the parking lot from Marina Market said she had seen them and they were really nice.

I agree. Improvements in the VI should be celebrated and I apologize right here and now for putting any negative light on something that has been anxiously anticipated for such a long time. Red Hook improvements are a good thing.

Anyone need to park in Red Hook? You can park at the Eudora Kean High School. The students are raising money for projects at the school! Each day a different department has the gate. $5 per day!

School has been doing a good business. The "new" lot seems to really have faded in terms of parkees!

They do all types of fundraisers at the schools back in Missouri including selling parking places for our parades and events. Not uncommon there anyway. In small towns it is usally the only parking available for big events. My two cents. 🙂
