Reality check
We have spent the past two years visiting the Virgin Islands, primarily the BVI, for a couple weeks at a time. We love the "island time" philosophy, have become acquainted with "you can't get that here" and are seriously considering relocating to USVI. We currently live in a pretty rural, water dominated environment so feel with that experience and our island experiences, we would have no trouble adapting. Leaving family is not much of an issue and friends can be made.....we've moved so many times in 20 years....
We are not near retirement, though we'd like to be, so we will need to find employment. Here is the problem I suspect. I am a 25 year veteran of manufacturing management. My wife is a former English instructor at community college level and has no teaching certificates of any type. We are willing to give up a lot because we recognize the salary structure. But realisticly, is there any type job ever available for either of us?
And how does one ship a boat, say 23' to the USVI?
Rudy,
Suggestions:
Order a Settlers Handbook - its a guide book to life and moving to the USVI. Covers everything from infrastructure, government, jobs, housing, real estate, fishing, boating, doctors, schools, pets.... you can order it from http://www.vitraders.com
Your wife with her experience should find a job here teaching, perhaps at a public high school or private highschool and can look into also teaching maybe Freshman English Courses at the University. I have known several highschool teachers who teach evening Freshman classes at the University. Granted they taught maybe only 2 courses 3 times a week - as they were not full time professors. She will definately find work in highschools though - there is a high demand for experienced teachers!!
For yourself, manufactoring management - what exactly do you do, what field would you want to work in here, could you do store management, or hotel maintenance management - would you be interested in staying in management but changing the field??

And about the boat...if you ren't going to sail it down... there is a big boat that brings boats, or you can ship it shrink wrapped in a container. Talk to Tropical and Crowley..
