re: Villa Santana on STT
Hello Everyone,
I'm coming to St. Thomas the first week in June for a "scouting mission". I was checking out some of the hotels mentioned on the message boards, and did some additional research on google.com. Villa Santana looked interesting, or at least the web site has some good photos of the rooms and views. Anyone stayed there, or know anything about it? It is a short walking distance from Chalotte Amalia. Is that a "good area"? I prefer to stay at places with character, rather than the chain hotels. Any advice or feedback would be appreciated.
Also, I've read several times on this message board that a good road map of St. Thomas does not exist, but how about just a general (less-detailed) map of the island? I only have a few days, so I want to plot my course to check out as much as possible. The better my map, the more productive my visit. Not that I won't be taking some time for R & R.
Thanks,
Ansley
Hi Ansley,
I'm sure that you have seen Ronnie's name on this board. He is a fantastic person with wonderful insight. He also has the Crystal Palace - a very lovely B & B. Great prices and right off the water front.

Ansley: There is a Pocket Map you can get for free at the airport when you arrive- it is sponsored by American Express, pretty easy to find. For the most part, you have to get out and drive around. As a wise man once told me, "It's an island, you can't get too lost!" If you have an appointment, ask for directions and write whatever they say down (this part is important!) Ask if there is anything special you should look for- you'll get things like a red car, a purple whale, a wall, etc. When you see it, you will know what they are talking about... Be careful downtown as there are one-way streets that are not well marked.
Hello Ansley,
Villa Santana is on a hillside overlooking town, yes just a short walk from main street and waterfront... During the day its fine, not recommended that you walk at night though - so take a taxi or if you have a rental car thats good too. A road map as East Ender mentioned you can pick up from the rental car agency or at the airport tourist booth (if you don't see any individual maps pick up one of the guide magazines they often have general maps in the center of them).
