Rainfall amounts in St. Croix

Been searching for real estate in Saint Croix this past week and have a question as to the rainfall amount on the East side of the island. There are cactus and the landscape looks very different from the other areas. I have heard that there is only 10-12 inches of rain a year on the East side. How can this amount of rain support their water storage for the year? Is there an ideal side of Saint Croix with respect to nice neighborhoods or is The East end the place to be even without water.
Thanks, Ed

Hello Ed,

The east end side of St. Croix is pretty nice, there are lots of great homes there. The east end is dry, and the west side has lots of forested area. You should look at the moving guide on this site so that you can see pictures and read the description of the island. The rain fall in St. Croix and in the USVI in general is an issue. Most homes, with the exception of those in town that have public water access, have cisterns. Water is collected from rain water. When one runs out of water then you have to buy a truck of water to put in the cistern. Prices for water truck deliveries can be found in the cost of living section on the moving guide.

Ed,
my opinion's a bit biased about the east end. I think it's a great and convenient area of STX to live on. We have a home past yacht club and love the location. Since you mentioned you're looking for real estate, and if you're interested in building I'll sendy ou an e-mail with some particulars of 2 parcels of land you may be interested in.

Regards,
Ali.

I still have this question as to the rainfall amount on the East side. I can not find info on this anywhere at all only the island average.
Thanks Ed

Ed,
You can check w/SC Yach Club, right off of east end road, or the Fairleigh Dickinson U's extension campus down there. As far as I know, there are no other entities that keep track of the micro data you're looking for. Also, the east end firestation MAY have this information. Albeit, very few businesses are on the east end, you should look for weather related businesses (boating, noaa, sail makers maybe, radio stations, ...etc.) on the east end and get the precipitation info. from them. There may also be some sailing, or atmospheric enthusiasts that live on the east end who may be collecting the data. I'd check w/someone at SCYC who's familiar with the members, or with the local NOAA folks.

Good luck,
Ali.
