quitars?!
so im trying to avoid lugging my quitar down there... if i have no other choice i will, but does any one know if there are decent and half way cheap quitars for sale around... not even just on STT, if i could get one on any of the near by islands that would be great. i just dont really trust my favorite wuitar being thrown around with suitcases and such!
Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Amy! sorry , me again. Terry. I play guitar and I actually am thinking about my future move. there has got to be a way to ship your Precious things. because I couldn't live without my guitars, and actually finding someone to play with!! Ha aha aha. what a change a white boy from texas learning the Local music scene.
Just more input !! I think you post make me think about myself ! peace T
"T", well im sure i can ship it, but it might be kinda cool to have a guitar from down there and im really trying to aviod the whole shipping thing all together, tonight i managed to weed outlike 95% of my things, and im leaving them at my moms house, i fit everything into my hiking bag and a carry on... i kick ass! but then i have my quitar and i dont want that on a plane, they throw bags around like they are pillows or something! terry, when do u plan on making the move?
Hey fellow pickers,
I just got back from playing at my daughter's wedding in STT. I didn't want to take my guitar either, but it worked out really well. Don't know what airline you are flying, but I have flown Delta and USAir and shipped my guitar. When you check in with it tell them it is fragile and requires special handling. They will (should) handle it as gently as a pet. They put it in a special area, and most of the time and in Atlanta, it is hand delivered to a special area with golf clubs and other special freight. There was no extra charge and my guitar was fine. However, if I were shipping my Martins, I would probably buy extra insurance just to be on the safe side.
P.S. When going to a humid climate, I always pack a couple of bags of silica in the case to keep the moisture content in the wood to a minimum.
Hello Amy,
The Music Shoppe on St. Thomas, in Havensight Shopping Center, sells quitars. I don't know the prices... they are new quitars. Also sell music and other instruments. You could call them and ask about specific quitars and see if they carry them and how much - (340)774-1900

thanks guys! big help!
Hi Amy,
You can call the airline you're going to travel with and, ask if you can get personal escort for your guitar. In which case it will be hand carried to the baggage compartment and, hand picked up at your destination. i have done this several times, actually walking with the escort to the plane. I have a rather expensive guitar, never had any damage with or without the escort

amy,
BB makes an important point. If you are moving from a dry climate with a wooden musical instrument, the humidity here should be an important concern. Give the wood time to gradually expand.
ironman, thanks for the tip on escort service. I had no idea of this. I'll use it some day when I get back to Ohio to get my cello. God, I miss that thing.
ironman... this escort service... does it cost anything, ive never heard of this either! but that sounds perfect! i would think there would be some type of charge though!
amy
amy,
never any charge. I would just ask to have it hand carried and someone would show up to take it. However I might add these days, I doubt if they will let you go out on the tarmac with the escort. By the way, I never really called before hand, again times have changed, it would'nt hurt to call.

P.S. I'll be moving down to stx in the near future
ok ironman i got one more for ya.... i want to bring my gig bag down... for convenience purposes... i hate lugging around a big case...i like whenb all my belongings can fit on my back! do you think it woul be safe to just bring it down in that with this escort thing or do you think i should just go for the hard case??
thanks a bunch!
Amy, depending on the airline you fly, you can request that they put your guitar in a sturdy shipping box. They will probably charge you about $10.00 for it. Then they will hand carry it to the plane for special handling. Call you airline ahead of time to be sure they offer this service. But I wouldn't ship it in a gig bag by itself. You may be able to talk them into putting it up in first class in the clothing closet; depends on the aircraft.
amy,
go with the hardcase always. It will still get bumped around a little during flight.
Bubba has a good idea. I also know that carry on space, ie; closets are bigger now so maybe you can carry it right on the plane. In any event i believe any airline will gladly help you in protecting your guitar, after all, it's not just any old piece of baggage.

Let us know how you make out.

id love to let you guys know how i make out... but i leave tomorrow morning, and i will no longer have a computer.... wish me luck all! ill be there tomorrow night ! thanks for everyones help!
ha... well im back online, its kinda nice. well i made it safely and so did my quitar... i REALLY took a dare and kept it in my gig bag, didnt use an escort service, AND didnt even put it in a box! but it worked, on my first flight i was ble to keep it up in the front of the plane where people keep weding dresses and such, on my second flight i fit it in the over head.... the third flight.... which was a 8 person tiny little plane, i put it right behind my seat! i got sooooo lucky!
so besides all of that...we have now been here for 10 days... and so far so good. we have had our bad/stressful days.... we were stuck in our room for the first 3 days because Jeanne wanted to pay us a little visit! but beside that things are slowly falling into place, we got jobs and are feeling pretty confident about our adjustment....and let me say, we've done a lot of adjusting, its very different from Boston and very hard to make things work out well for ourselves. but crissy and i both are up for this challenge! of course we have our good days and our bad days but, it seems that there a more good then bad and we are just trying to appriciate the life we have on this island while it lasts! thanks everyone for everything, ill be around!
Sounds great Amy!! One of these days, we'll have to have a get together (when I get to move there) with everyone that plays and trade songs and stories all night long. Have a great time!! Take care. BB
Amy,
Glad to hear you all made it down safely. As another former Bostoner I welcome you and Crissy, and make sure when the first Nor'Easter hits up there that you send a digital picture of the ocean taken that day and email it to all your friends.
I plan on doing that alot. I'm mean. Anywho, welcome and if you need anything let me know I'm fairly handy so if you need help putting together furniture or anything around tjhe house let me know.
