Questions re: STT
I am a candidate for a job in Charlotte Amalie, and have been perusing this board since I first learned about the position (about 6 weeks ago). I am so grateful to have found this site! It has soooo much great info! My thanks to all of you who take the time to offer advice, opinions, info, etc. to all of us who are contemplating THE BIG MOVE.
I have tons of questions, even after reading pages and pages on this board, but since this is my first posting I will try to start off slowly.
- How is "Amalie" pronounced? Which syllable is stressed?
- It seems that dairy products are particularly expensive there. I have a major passion for ice cream, so this is of great concern! I read on the Fodor's site that prices at Cold Stone Creamery start at $8!!! Is that accurate? Please tell me there are places that are less expensive! How much is a carton of ice cream at the market? Are ice cream churns available there? As you can see, this is serious business for me - might even end up being a deal breaker!;)
- My potential employer is setting up a PMV that will take place in the next 2-3 wks. We are already pretty far along in the hiring process; if all goes well once we meet face to face I will be using the remainder of my visit to start getting things in place for becoming a STT resident (Wow! That has a nice ring!). In terms of housing, I will be looking for something fairly modest, but not too cramped...probably an apt. or small cottage. Ideally, I'd like it to have an airy feel and have some privacy. I'm not really a city girl, but I don't want to have too much of a commute, either. I'd love to be able to hear the ocean, but that's not an absolute necessity (I can always aspire to that later). Any suggestions as to what areas I should consider? From what I've read, the northside (maybe Mandahl Bay vicinity) sounds appealing. How long is the drive from town?
Thanks for your help!
Briefly on the ice cream issue... I am not a big fan of Stone Cold. Yes, they are expensive and not such great quality. You can get Haagen Daz in many markets. I will check the price, probably around $5 a pint? If prices bother you, you will have trouble adjusting. Everything except liquor is expensive.
After nearly 8 months of living here I've heard many different ways of saying Charlotte Amalie. I think it's uh-MAL-ya, but I'm sure if I'm wrong I'll be corrected by those who actually know. Most people just say they're going to "Town" and everyone knows what that means. For example: I have to go to town today, do you know how many ships are in?
Also, ice cream is around 5 to 7 dollars a pint in the grocery and convenience stores. Also, you have to go to Udder Delight, which is on the way to Magen's, and try their delicious shakes. My favorite is the Jamocho, which I'm sure I misspelled. Could that, and the endless supply of cheap rum be the reason why the clothes I brought here with me no longer fit? Anyway, I think I've seen electric ice cream makers at k-mart.
Mandahl (and close to Udder Delight!) is fairly centrally located and it shouldn't take much more than 15 minutes to get to most places on the island depending on traffic.
Ice Cream in the markets are around $5/half gallon and taste good. The gourmet brands like Tom and Jerry's are more expensive.
As far as where to live - you need to be here to decide. I suggest finding a place to stay for 30 days or so and taking that time to look. Areas are so different - north side is wetter and colder than south side. East End is more dense and dryer. You really have to see each apartment also unless you are going to rent at a resort like Sapphire where you can look at pictures on the net.
I think you mean BEN and Jerry's. Tom and Jerry are cartoon characters.
Thanks - you are right Ben and Jerry's Guess I was thinking cartoon stuff.
Thanks for your replies, everyone! Sorry not to have responded sooner. I was out of town for several days attending a conference, where I seem to have picked up a sinus and respiratory infection that put me out of commission for a few more days. Then my internet service went on the blink, so I'm just getting back on the board.
My PMV is coming up fast! I'll be on St. T 2/2 - 2/8. I feel that reading all the great info on this board has really helped prepare me to ask the right questions and to spend my time there efficiently.
Another question: Is there any difference between "gade" and "strade?" Are they both just another term for "street?"
