Questions for those moving to USVI

Hello All,

It seems like a lot of people are planning a move within the next few months, obviously, there would have to be to support a message board like this. My question is - are you planning a permanent move, long-term move (at least two years plus) or just a short-term mover (less than two years)?

Also, what do you plan to do for work?

Which island are you hoping to move to?

Thanks in advance for all your answers!

I'm short term unless I can find a job in my field, then I'd consider staying depending on how thigns go. I'm hoping for either STJ or STT.

Greetings,

I hope to move permanently. I've lived through too many cold, cloudy, snowy Cleveland winters. Spring and fall aren't so great either.

I plan to continue working in horticulture. This could be at a garden center, taking care of plants at a resort, or doing commercial and residential landscaping.

I plan to move to St. Croix. It seems to have a broader range of plants that I can study and it's less expensive than the other 2 major islands. Economy's in a bit of a rut, though.

Hi Curious: We are planning to move to St. John permanently. We are tired of the cold winters in New England and love the US Virgin Islands so why not live where you desire to be. My husband will do construction work and I will also get a job while the little ones are at school. We have traveled to St. John for the past 11 years and each time we left on the ferry we vowed we would be back again someday forever. Life is too short to shiver!!!!!!!!

Goodnight, Curious....

We say goodbye to Washington DC and move into our new STX home in just three weeks! Our goal is to make it our last home unless my medical problems become so severe that we must move to be near a major medical center and rehab hospital. My health is rapidly declining and I am having breathing problems, uncontrollable spasms and severe, horrible pain that will only get worse until it becomes quadriplegia -- yet alk of these afflictions improve greatly after being in the VI for even a week. It's our plan to get me feeling better and use that time to vconvert our house into one that's accessible for a quad before I need it to be that way, and to enjoy the beaches, snorkeling, and fishing for as long as I can before the quadriplgia maks it to hard to do often.

I am extremely fortunate to be bringing my current job with me to the islands. I'm the director of online communications and advocacy for a non-profit criminal justice refrm group in DC. Will simpoly do my work remotely using phone, IM, email, and teleconferencing plus a few trips back each year to meet with funders and work on benefkits and legisl.ative crunch times. With the great deal we got on our STX house and that we can give up one car and its related costs because I will be working from home, my hubby Kelly won't have to work unless he chooses to, but I'd prefer that he just hang with me as house spouse and get involved in some local theater groups, something he's always wanted to do.

Can't wait to get there and leave this polluted, corrupted (read: Rumsfelded), self-important city behind and start woprking on tearing ouit walls to make my first huge, fully accessible master suite with master bath containinga roll-in shower and a tub wth a lift.

Curious,
So I am planning on moving forever! Well I say that now but everything is up in the air with my lifestyle....if I find an ideal job in my desired career, I will stay a long time. If I am struggling to make ends meet, I will stay for less time. I am leaving on Tuesday of next week and will be living and working in St thomas. For now I have a job at a samll hotel/restaurant but will actively be looking for an additional job at either a bigger resort, on small boat charter, or whatever comes my way. See you there!

Hello Curious,
We are planning a long term move. The job my husband took is really good for his career. We didn't really plan on moving to the islands, it kind of 'looked' for us. He had a one week contract job and I came along for a 'free' trip to STT. We ended up getting a job offer. I am giving up my career for my husband's. It is okay. I am very versatile and have had many careers. I will probably get back to my watercolor painting. Great scenery to work with. 😉 We are moving to St. Thomas.

My husband and I plan on living in StX forever, forever, forever....
We will be moving when all our stars are in alignment....HaHaHa...Which actually means, when all our plans are achieved one by one. Selling vehicles, downloading items we don't want, garage sales, selling off properties, closing down a business etc...
We will be creating our own jobs by ultimately buying and/or establishing a b&b and/or using our trade (which is embroidery and sewing) to earn money....

Hello Curious!

My husband and I will be there in two weeks! I will be doing an intership in a pharmacy on STT for the enitre summer. This is our way of checking out the island before I graduate to see whether making the permanent move afterwards is viable.

Hey Curios!!

We are planning on moving to STT in July, I am going to be working for Diamonds International, selling jewelry to cruise ship/tourist customers. I have a wife and a 3 year old.

I dont know if we can make enough money to survive....rent, water, etc.

Does anyone have any stories/suggestions/ideas regarding employment with Diamonds International or the cruise ship tourist business in general?

We plan to move permanently, just want to be able to survive!!!

Eve,
My wife Margaret is a cross stitcher. I just bought her a new Bernina Deco 650 embroidery machine that she will be bringing to St Croix in June. You girls will need to get together to share ideas and patterns and "keep each other in stitches".
(Pun intended).

My husband and I have two commercial machines... A 9 needle Brother that works like a train (13 years old) and a 12 needle SWF. We'll be buying a vehicle on island cause the machines are the size of a small car. YIKES!!! Does your wife know what .dst formats are? My husband says I'm good at keeping people in 'stitches' LOL
