Questions for residents of STT

Hello all. My husband was recently in STT for a job interview. I plan to go down shortly to get a feel for the place, get my own impressions. However, prior to arriving I would love to know from those of you who live on STT what it is that drew you to the island and what you love about being there. Thus far I have heard and read that it is beautiful, but that’s all I’ve heard on the positive side. I’ve heard and read about the high cost of living and the high crime rate given the size/population of the island. What are the great things that counterbalance the bad?
Also, is it easy to develop a sense of community on the island? Easy to make friends? Is there a divide between the races or do they mingle freely and socially?
Thanks much for any and all input!!

Poor Michelle....see how they treat Continentals....
Just kidding....One of the things that drew me here, were the tax benifits....Because of the type of work I do, a very large portion of my income is non-taxable as long as I do it from here in the USVI.
As far as the cost of living, no more than California, at least here if you pay $600,000 for a house, you get a third bedroom!!!!!! Food is a bit high, but as anyone here will tell you, learn to buy what at which store for the best deals..
Obviously the beaches here are beautiful and plentiful, but one other thing that makes this a great place is the proximity to so many other islands which can be travelled to and explored with no more that an hour or two on a plane or a boat!!
Making friends here is no problem, just like anywhere else, just go where your interests take you and you'll find lots of like minded people.
And for me,I have no problems with race here on the island, everyone here has been very nice to me.
Hope this helps.....I do know that your question about crime was answered on a thread 6 or 7 months ago when someone posted the stats here versus any other city.
Good luck to you!!!!

Thanks Becky and Jay! I was feeling a bit lost in the ruckus and starting to wonder if people just didn't have much good to say about anything other than the physical beauty of the place. It's good to hear that making friends isn't difficult. Having no experience with the islands, just wasn't' sure. In some places people connect quickly, others not so. S. Florida (where we are currently located) tends to be the later, but once you're here for a while you get your groove and find your people.

Well don't be turned off....lots of good advise here, sometimes some folks ignore the questions because they feel its been answered a million times...if you keep asking, they'll come around 🙂

I can understand that Jay...the asked a million times already...and I'm not turned off. I keep digging through old posts and finding good pieces of information.
Do any of you who use this message board and live in the islands know one another get together with any regularity? Is this a good place to meet people prior to a move down?

Michelleje,

Yes this is a great place to meet people after you have moved. It was my lifeline to get answers to questions I had after moving to island as well. Stay in contact and you will be glad you did. I got both my part time jobs thru people I met on this board. We used to have get togethers quite a lot. If you want one, just find a place and time and tell everyone here to come meet you, vacationers and residents. We had a lot of fun at those get togethers.

I found it very easy to make friends. I got active immediately in organizations | was interested in. I also made friends at my job. I'm not one who has ever needed to be entertained or have tons of diversions - I like to read, etc. I'm also not into the bar scene which many do get into, sometimes to their detriment. Usually, you will find your niche if you look around & become involved with organizations NOT with the attitude of "This is the best way to do it because we do it that way in the States so listen to me." A true desire to help goes a long way.

I've met my share of jerks but made many life-long friends who don't even live here any more. Best of luck.

I can't help you much, as it was not my choice to move here! I was born here. You can click on the top of the page on the Moving Center. There you will find FAQs there as well as if you click on the What to Expect link, you will find 44 moving stories which probably will answer most of your questions.

Thanks all!
Teresa and Trade, good to know it's easy to meet people and make friends. I've volunteered locally and can see doing so where ever we end up next as well. Also not very into the bar scene..used to be, but it gets old after a while.
Ronnie, I've been doing that as well.
