Is it possible to live on STX and reasonably commute to STT for work?

Not without making expenses comparable to (or higher than) just living on STT. Plus it would be time consuming.

is there anything I can do to make myself more marketable?

Not until you have made the move, unless you work for a hotel chain that has locations here. Then it might be easier to make an internal move to a property on STT.

Is it reasonable to expect to make a decent living working at a resort year round?

That depends on your position and your standard of living, but many people do it.

Again, depends on your standard of living, but that should work. Budget for first/last/security, food, transportation (including shipping and insuring/registering your car), general startup expenses (furnishings and household goods, if your place is unfurnished). Also make sure you have enough funds to cover your daily needs while you look for work.

Is it possible to secure housing before moving or is it best to short term rent while looking for something?

Yes, and yes.

How are the public schools? Is private schooling necessary? I've read the public schools in STX are pretty good. Is this true? How are the public schools on STT?

Opinions vary. I am not a parent, so I'll let others weigh in here.

Can you live on STT and attend school on STX?

No. It's hard enough for the kids on St John who have to attend high school on St Thomas.

Is resort employment as abundant on STX and it is on STT?

You can check what's available online at resorts such as Margaritaville, Ritz Carlton, Marriott Frenchman's Reef resorts. There are many other resorts, large and small on STT. Some hire from off island, most don't.
Sorta like the Baba Ramdas " Be Here Now" mantra.

What you'd save in rent by living on STX and working on STT would be eaten up immeasurably in both cost and time.
Even living on STJ and commuting to STT in costly and a pain.
You'd be in debt and probably want to shoot yourself after the 1st week!

If you miss the ferry, youve missed 1/2 a day or the entire day at work, weather bad, forget about it, miss the last ferry home, spend the night in hotel, then there's the actual getting to and from ferry to where you're working without reliable bus or safari taxi service which will drop you on main road and you'll have to hoof it the rest of way in the hot sun, on extremely narrow roads with no sidewalks. Sounds appealing, doesn't it? This is without factoring in costs of daily commute!

How old is your son?
Joseph E Sibilly is a good public grade school on STT and one can always explore Montessori and Antilles for possible lower tuition fees if you qualify.
Sts. Peter and Paul, All Saints, Lutheran schools are also a possibility and less costly than private. If your son is in high school, I wouldn't recommend a public school. Period.

If you haven't been here, do yourself a favor and do a pre-move visit (pmv).
Check out schools and possible jobs. You don't want to work on one side of the island, live on the other and have your son going to school in the completely opposite location. You'll need a car!

Create a budget for yourself and double it.
But do your homework because this has to work for you and your son.
How's he getting to and from school, If he's out at 2:30 -3pm and you don't get off from work until 5 or later, etc.?

Thank you. Yes Marriott and ritz Carlton are at the top of my list. I'm also considering getting an entry job at my local ritz Carlton and then seeing if they'll transfer me. Maybe an internal transfer will be easier.
I do plan on shipping my car over.
My son will be starting kindergarten by the time I'm ready to make the move. Right now I live in NYC and our public schools are pretty shitty here as well. Homeschooling is also a back burner option. Ill definitely apply for tuition assistance to private school but I want a back up plan in case I can't afford it.

There are more hotels/resorts on STT than STX. STX has two larger resorts, several small boutique resorts, and several small hotels and a new one opening soon. The Marriott on STX is a licensed franchise not corporate owned, it's actually owned by the local government employees retirement association. We also have lots of good restaurants.
