Questions About Jobs and Buffett

I am 18 and planning on moving to St. Croix whenever I accumulate the money.

I am graduating high school in a few weeks and am currently working with a remodeler.
My ideal job in the islands is to be a musician. (I play the drums) I am open to all kinds of music from rock, to reggae, jazz and everything in between. I realize this is not the easiest profession to make a living by, but that is my dream.

My question is this: How hard is it going to be for an 18 year old kid to find a day job, a reasonable appartment, (I have a potential roomate already who is planning on moving with me.) and a good bar to hang out at, with a high school education and no friends or relatives in the islands? And would i be better off choosing a different island?

I am currently living near Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and I definatly cant spend another winter here. A friend turned me on to Jimmy Buffett and all I can think about is spending my days and nights in paradise with good people and good weather, Ive read most of the posts on the message board and I can see it is not going to be easy but I've got to get out of this town. I was wondering if anyone else had similar inspiration for the move.

Hey, I am also 18, and I'm going back home to St. Croix over the summer (I go to school in Rhode Island). Maybe I can help you out if you choose to move. Drop me an email sometime, if you have any more specific questions. I'd write more, but I am extremely busy right now (college life... LOL).

Hello,

Congrats. on graduating! Finding a music gig is going to be tough but certainly not impossiable. You would need to network at all the live music venues like the jazz at sunset, reggae venues, Cheeseburgers in Paradise often has live soft rock music so check there and other restaurants that have bands playing... and talk to the musicians. I am quite certain that all the musicians here do something else as a day job so you need to think of what you want that to be; one guy I know works as a framer in an art gallery and does gigs at night, weddings ect., I had a professor at UVI who was also a muscian, a doctor by day - muscian at special gigs at night, a jewlerly store owner by day and a reggae band member by night, photographer by day & band member, a sales person at an electronics store and a muscian... hope you get the picture. If all these musicians are working day jobs and doing music at night there is a reason; they need the steady realiable income to make ends meet. So not an impossiable dream you just need to think of another job you would like to do along with the music.

You can find apartments and a good bar and you will meet new people and will need to keep in touch with your relatives as the first couple months will be tough without the support network you might be used to back home.

Boris,

I wish I still had your your and energy. I've been playing Buffett music since he started, 30 years ago. I still play, but don't play professionally anymore. Just for fun (drinks and tips, as they say). The thing is, if you really want to play music badly enough, go to all the bars that play your kind of music. Talk to all the musicians, they usually know people looking for players, or people who want to start a band. Thats how I started when I was in college a long time ago. I've played in all kinds of bands, duos, trios, even did a single for a while. I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything. I would have played for free (actually did on many occasions, just to get started).

I'm planning on moving to STX in the near future. Not planning on playing out anymore, but would be great to get together with some people and play music, exchange ideas, and have a few cold ones.

Good luck to you, and keep playing. It keeps you young. Look a Buffett-he hasn't grown up yet!!!!

Barefoot,
Mark and I are looking at a place on StX. Hopefully, we will have an area where one such as yourself would feel comfortable comming in to sit and play. What do you call it?
Jam Sessions? But not rock and roll. More the jazz and Buffett styles, Calm and comfortable. Drinks and Fun... Keep us in mind if our dreams work out.

Eve, sounds great. If OUR plans work out we probably won't be too far from you. At this time in my life, I get greater satisfaction playing music for friendly people who like "easy listening" music and just want to sit around, play music, talk, and have a few beers or glasses of wine. Hopefully we all can get together in the near future.
