Questions about Importing a rather special car...

It's probably not worth even thinking about but thought I'd ask... Although moving to the islands is quit some time off for us I was wondering what it would take to import a car I'm restoring. It's a 1966 Amphicar. It's made in Germany and only about 4000 were ever built. It's an amphibious car. The idea of cruising around the coves and fishing from the back seat of my car sounds fun. 🙂 That said salt water wont be good to it. I'd need to rinse it off every time I took it out and sounds like fresh water is hard to come by. But hell it sure would be fun! 🙂

Low ground clearance can be very probematic. Salt water will be bad. Also remember, it's the ocean, not a lake. Can it be swamped & sink? I would recommend against bringing it.

You cannot drive on the beaches here so you would have a hard time driving to the water. There are also large rocks and coral reefs that may damage or get damaged by the car.

I love the Amphicar! There were a couple of them where I used to live. Did you see Waking Life? There was an Amphicar in that movie.

As others have said, it might not work well down here. However, there may be one or two places where you could conceivable put in-- I have seen a boat ramp or two here and there. The water might be too rough though.

About the only safe place I know to drive in will be either Salt River and it is usually calm there, or Cane Bay has a ramp however it can get very rough there very quickly. Plus there are too many swimers and SCUBA divers that you would pose a threat to.
I love cars and would recommend you don't bring your baby! Those are worth a lot of money and it will just rust away to a worthless heap!
