Questions
Ok- I've read all the posts on here and now I have some more questions of my own:
1.) Can I get away with having just a cell phone with no home phone?
2.) If the answer is yes to question #1 what is the major cell phone provider on St. Thomas?
3.) We will be doing our pre-move visit in November (week of Thanksgiving). Would it be wise to reschedule that trip due to the fact that business may be closed because of Thanksgiving?
4.) When we do come for our pre-move visit, where should we stay that is sort of in the middle of everything? We want to be able to explore all aspects of the island and we feel it would be best to be centrally located.
5.) Does anybody know off hand of short term rental places that accept dogs?
6.) I would like to contact utility companies to get an idea of monthly costs for water, electric, gas, cable, internet etc. Should I just go to the yellow pages to get their phone #'s? would they be willing to give me basic pricing information over the phone without having a VI address?
7.) Does anyone have contact phone #'s for Real Estate Management companies located in St. Thomas?
I'm sure I'll have more questions...thank you for taking the time to try to answer some of my questions!

1.) More than likely - depending upon the location the cell may not work in the home. If the phone works in your location, no problem.
2.) Most of my customers seem to be going with Sprint lately. Varies.
3.) WAPA (water and power) and the phone company will more than likely be closed but all the retail stores, realty companies, etc. will reopen Friday or Saturday.
4.) Can't help you with this one - I stick to the east end as much as possible.
5.) Mike at Captain's Quarters may allow it as there is a dog on property. Contact him at 775-1717 and ask.
6.) WAPA is not going to give you an estimate as it depends on the location. Innovative Telephone (779-9999) will give you an estimate. Gas will, again, be depending on location - my apartment has no gas appliances. Cable TV is 774-2080 and should give you an estimate. A couple of choices on your internet provider but you can ask Innovative Telephone can give you rates for thier DSL and modem hook up. Basic rates are around $19.95 and hook up is almost instantaneous.
7.) For rentals you see Reliable Realty a lot in the papers reliable@islands.vi - it's a place to start.
Hope this helps!

Awesome! Thank you Pamela! You've been a huge help!
Jessica: Did you look at the home page here? www.vimovingcenter.com There are very helpful sections on several of your questions, like cost of living, places to live, etc. Just a little aside..I don't think anyone gets cell service everywhere here, like you do in the states. There are some notorious holes. We have a friend who can't get service at her place AND can't get Innovative to put in a land line. That is a pickle, isn't it?!
Maybe I am jumping ahead a bit....Yes, I have read the sections on the home page and I have found it very informational. I'm trying to build a spreadsheet to compare monthly expenses that I have now to monthly expenses I will have on the island. I'm a research queen so I want to be sure all my ducks are in a row before my pre-move visit as well as the "big" move...
Hello Jessica,
1.) Yes if you get a large cellular plan and it works where you live.
2.) Sprint, Cingular Wireless, Centennial and Innovative Communication
3.) Thanksgiving in on a Thursday - given the nature of holiday celebrations here - consider Thursday and Friday and half of Wednesday to be unproductive in terms of getting a hold of business owners (who might take long weekend to be with family on island or away) and government offices (which take long holidays regardless of holiday). Depending on your plans for the pre-move trip that week could still work - use the other days to contact businesses ect. and the holiday days to visit grocery stores, the island, laundrys and other places that you might want to look at prior to moving.
4.) Being centrally located would mean town... are you renting a car? If so you can stay anywhere you like - the island isn't that big so you can drive almost everywhere within 15-30 minutes.
5.) Not sure.
6.) We have an up to date cost of utilities section on this site (updated about two months ago) for water, electricity, cable, gas for cooking, gas for cars... check that out rather then calling all the companies. Note; no city water to the majority of busineses and residences, we have cisterns - so you buy trucks of water to put in the cistern when your water runs out. Condos and some apartments have water meters and charge a set rate per gallon.
7.) Look up real estate companies in the phone book if you would like a listing with numbers for all of them - http://www.viphonebook.com
Good Luck.
