Question of the Day?????
I am amazed at the numbers requesting moving informtion. So my question is this.
As long as the message board for moving has been in existence (and I don't know how long), what would be the total population of the VI's if everyone moved and everyone who moved stay???
/sitting in amazement
LOL. We'd sink beneath the crystal clear blue waters.
As Jimmy Buffett sang in "Cuban Crime of Passion" --- "People get by and people get high. In the tropics they come and they go"
One of the facts of life I've seen is that very often people are offered better jobs elsewhere or else retire & move to where it's less expensive to leave. It's a downside to being a resident. I miss a lot of people I've become very close to. You really sort of create families down here. Much easier to keep in touch though with the internet. 🙂
A ton of people get out of Dodge if there's a serious hurricane.
Promoguy,
I'd love to see an exit poll as well to see why they came, and why they left. I think many come with a fantasy of escaping to an idyllic island paradise, and leave with a dose of the brutal reality of living in the islands. Same thing happens in the warmer States that are very transient.
The last time I flew into the islands, I was trying to explain to the couple next to me that there is a very large amount of transients, and most leave the islands within six months due to Rock Fever. He brushed it off and said he was from Oklahoma or something, and they have a worse transient problem.
I did not argue with him, but I am sure per-capita wise, the islands have much more transients than just about anywhere else in the continental US.
Any opinions?
Noone,
I would have to agree the VI has a very high turnover rate. The grass is definately greener, but that's because it's the tropics.
Quite some time ago, I posted something about "why are you leaving"? I got quite a few replys. Maybe it's time to post something like that again.
go "bump" the old post.
I left the states to get away from my kids. Now I may have to leave the island to get away from them. Rotten little buggers. Help! They are following me. Put me on a boat somewhere. I'll give you my house if you hide me. Happy New Year to you all.
Tammy
The transient population here has always been huge even if one discounts those who come here admittedly just for a season or a year or two.
"Trade" makes a very good point when saying, "I miss a lot of people I've become very close to." I don't know how long "Trade" has lived here (I could research it on the forum as it's probably mentioned somewhere - point made?) but it's a very valid point.
People come and go for many different reasons and the average person becomes a little more recalcitrant about forming close bonds than they might be in, for instance, a rural stateside community where the family has been around for years, people look out for each other and all is safe and comfortable.
I probably become more "local" as the years go by and newcomers simply have to understand that you can live here for several years but will never be a part of the community until you participate in the community, get to know locals, bahn-heres and all else by mingling with everyone. And also standing up for what you believe in.
The latter is a tough one and you'd better have been here and mingled well for a while before you go that route.
Enough, I've rambled. Cheers to all.
You weren't supposed to give them your address. LOL 🙂
