question about usps and customs
hi all,
just wondering why boxes shipped through the usps from the states to the usvi do not go through customs? or do they? i searched the topic and found several posts stating that they do not... is it different for things sent from the usvi to the states? i recieved a package from a friend in stj with a customs declaration on it...
thank you,
erin
That must be why my husband's package didn't make it here to Michigan from St. Croix.
He sent a package 3 weeks ago with his laptop for me to get repaired. It still says in transit when I track it through ISHIP.com
We insured it so hoping they have lost it since it is new and hasn't worked right since he got it.
Marlene
Hopefully you sent to USPS PRIORITY not regular mail 🙂

Hi Bardsley,
If you are sending mail TO to the USVI from the states the answer is no.
If you are sending mail FROM the USVI to the states the answer is yes -- and you are required to fill out a customs declaration form.
It is my understanding that Fedex and UPS are required to go through customs in both directions.
Marlene, good luck with your package. Did your husband send it Priority Mail or Parcel Post?
Anything over one pound sent USPS must have a Customs declaration on it to be mailed from the island.
I send commercial items to about three clients via USPS Priority. No customs declaration is necessary at the Stateside end.
This subject was up before....Islander had a response 4/26/05 that was very informative.
Or you can go to www.USPS.com.
Hey Marlene:
It's been my experience that the best way to make your insured USPS insured package show up is to make noises about filing an insurance claim for the lost package. Not surprisingly, paying off claims seems to be the last thing they want to do.
Best,
