Public Transportation-St. Croix

I am preparing for a 2 month stay in St. Croix, and I will be living in the LaGrange area near Frederiksted. I was wondering what it will be like trying to catch a bus or "safari tour"? to peform weekly tasks like getting groceries, KMart, etc.?
I have read numerous times on this website that a car is necessary, but I am only staying 2 months and I really cannot afford renting that often.
I was wondering if anyone knew about a bus map or just a good map of St. Croix in general.
P.S.-Where is St. Croix Country Day School in comparison to Frederiksted, I cannot find it on any map.
Thanks everyone,
Chad

There is a van/taxi that is only two dollars, and I believe that is also the bus system. It mainly only goes from Christiansted to Fredricksted and back. The normal taxis are quite expensive but can take you to other parts of the island. Just ask around, and found out where the "bus" stop is, people will be happy to help

For you, a car is really necessary. I live near LaGrange in an area called Jolly Hill, and the nearest place that has a taxi (the ones that go from Fsted to Csted) is probably 2-3 miles away, and is extremely inconvenient if you're doing groceries. Also, the private taxis are very expensive (I would assume like $15 each way to Kmart maybe). The public transportation (VITRAN) is horrible in my opinion, unreliable, and downright useless. Country Day is in the middle of the island. It is about a 20-30 minute drive from LaGrange. Just buy a beat-up car, like a $400 car or something, and drive with your stateside license if you have one.

Thanks alot for the advice. Are old beat up cars available, where would I look. I have lilke a week to figure that out before I start work there?
What about a motor-scooter, would that work?

I don't know much about motor scooters, but looking for a car would be easier if you were actually here. I think www.virginislandsdailynews.com has an advertisement section. Also if you know anyone who lives here, they might be able to check on a car for you.
