Hello Islander and Board,

It has been awhile since I started my own topic. 😉 Anyway, we are attempting to 'transfer' our kids to public school. They are going into Kindergarten and First grade. My thoughts are that the elementary schools are 'not bad' as compared to the junior high and high school. I have heard conflicting information on the public schools. Here are my questions:

1) Are they accredited, not accredited, or losing accreditation?

2) How does accreditation affect gradutates? Shouldn't they be able to attend college if they pass their A.C.T.'s or S.A.T.'s?

3) Are there any parents on the board that have their kids in public school? How do they like it (parents and kids)?

4) Is anyone in the group - Friends of Volunteers in the Public Schools? Found it in the phonebook. Is it like P.T.A. (Parent Teachers Association) or do they have a P.T.A.?

5) Any other comments from people who know about public schools on STT? I have heard many opinions, but they seem to be passed around instead of inside info.

Thanks so much for any info.

Teresa: I believe the accreditation deal is with the high schools only. Someone on this board had kids at Sibilly and liked it. I agree with you that there are lots of people who give opinions on topics of which they have little first hand knowledge.

Tereas: I just noticed that Montessori is having an open house tomorrow morning Jan 18, 9-11 am. It says RSVP by calling 775-6360. Maybe you can check them out??

Thank you East Ender. I have checked out the Montessori. Great school for a high price! We are still considering it as well in our big bundle of options. Next fall we may put them in private school if public doesn't work out. Antilles is having another open house as well. I may check that out since they do have some 50% off tuition plans. I want to see what the qualifications include.

Hello Board,

Since I posted this a while back, I thought I would give an update. I enrolled my kids in public school - 1st grade and Kindergarten. I only found one store on STT that sells the correct plaid skirt for the uniforms, but other than that - it went really smoothly. My daughter loves her Kindergarten teacher and has made friends. My son said that he had to write a lot and didn't like that part (I think he reads better than he writes), but has also adjusted very well. I like his teacher - she has been able to keep him in line from day one and he needed that. I think homeschooling made him very lazy about discipline and working hard. I couldn't challenge him enough. He is doing well. We have only just started, but I have been pleased with the school so far. My kids are learning and catching up quite well. They have homework every night, except Friday and I can see how well they are doing and what they are learning every day. So far I have only positive things to say about the public school they are in. I still would love to hear from other parents about public school. There are some improvements needed before I would send my kids to junior high, but that could change. I hope it does.
