Premium dog food on St. Croix?
Is there anyplace on St. Croix that sells premium dog foods?
There's a pet store past Food Town - I don't know if they carry any dog or cat food, good or bad.....we were kind of stuck with Pedigree.
The place Becky is talking about is called Pet supply (they spent alot of time on the name) and they have some of the more expensive pet food. Take out a second mortgage if you want to buy any of their toys or products. I looked for a friend recently and their 5lb bag of eukenba was $32. Some of the vets carry science diet and eukenba. I know Dr Casey with progessive carrys some at his la grande princesse location. Not sure what he charges, but I love Dr Casey!
Are you kidding me? 32.00 for a bag of dog food? That is totally nuts. I know I spoil Jazzie and really spoil her rotten but I will not spend that much on her food,
Jeff & Mikki, I pay $35.00 for a 20 lb bag of Science Diet dry food. They eat much less of that than the grocery store brands & their coats are amazing. I used to use Pedigree exclusively so I can tell the difference.
Hey everyone
This is a great site for comparing brands - I was so surprised at some of the ingredients of the brands - some use all kinds of disgusting ingredients (ie: euthanized animal parts, floor sweepings etc 🙁 ) You can compare up to 4 brands at a time, and if you see an ingredient that you don't know what it is, just click on it for an explanation.
After using this I use Canidae available in STT and STJ not sure about STX, and for the quality the price is OK (imho 🙂 )

Piaa....okay, now you've started me on my favorite subject, dogs.....it is very difficult to get a true premium dog food on island - Eukanuba and Iams and Science Diet are no longer considered the food of the day.
Check the ingredient list......if there is corn, wheat, additives, by-products, food coloring - all of these things contribute to allergies, dull coats, and itchy animals. Corn and wheat are cheap fillers and you aren't getting a lot of solid nutrition except in the form of the added vitamins - but our furry friends are basically carnivores from long ago - they didn't go around eating wheat fields....for those of you who are willing and able, one alternative is to decrease the amount of kibble given and give part of a raw chicken back (depending on the size of the dog - my Rottweilers get 1/2 back per dog twice a day in addition to the rest of their raw diet)....the problem we found on island was even the parts of the chicken that no one really wants on the mainland (necks, wings, backs) were terribly expensive - well, comparatively speaking - when you're feeding 7 dogs, it is WAY pricey.....remember raw, though - never feed your dog any cooked bone.......I sometimes will grind my fresh chicken, but you have to be a true animal freak to go to all this trouble. Which I am. Another shady, sketchy, non-PETA-supporting animal weirdo...
Canidae is an EXCELLENT food....
Jeff and Mikki, I apologize to whomever is the vet tech - but I disagree regarding feeding human food. It does have to be researched, as some foods are toxic to dogs and cats (mushrooms, tomatoes, chocolate, etc.) but it can be done and is known as a BARF diet (Bones and Raw Food) - highly recommended by many top breeders. It's just more difficult to accomplish in the islands. Google BARF diet and see what you come up with - lots of good info.
I stopped by "Superior Pet Supply" in St. Croix next to Food Town. They do have a few premium products. They sell Wellness, which seems to be way way too expensive here, I guess because of shipping. They also sell Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul, which I've been hearing good things about.
