Pre-Move visit update
Good afternoon to all! What a wonderful tool this board continues to be. Thanks so much to all.
It's been a while since I updated on my PMV - so here goes.
I've had 2nd interviews with 2 companies. One is an EDC company and has told me that they want me but they have some EDC rules issues to work thru before they can offer me a job - has to do with my (lack of) residency. The other will let me know soon.
I have found housing (see my roommate wanted post). So, I am here to stay. I will go back probably a month later than I had originally planned. I planned for June 30th, but have a wedding to be in back home in August, so I will probably go then.
I won't be bringing much back - taking empty suitcases back to bring some things I'd rather buy in the states. Just my computer, a couple of personal items, and maybe a couple more "sleeved" tops/outfits.
That is one thing I have found is that the people here are a modest people for sure. They prefer that you were sleeves of some sort at a job. Even if it is a little sweater/jacket over a sleeveless top. They do like to dress well in offices.
Ric taught me to snorkle. What fun! I can't wait to do it again. I will be going on a 2 hour sail (sounds like Gilligan's Island to me) with Jones Maritime here on stx to see if I like sailing. If so, I will be taking their sailing course - a weekend thing for relatively inexpensive. And next week I do the Salt River Kayak tour.
I have fallen into daily life here very easily. There are inconveniences - going to Sunny Isle any time of the day - realizing that at 6pm you really want _____ to snack on and you have none at the house. And it's 2miles (read 15 minutes) to the store.
On a high note - I've been here 15 days and lost almost 20 lbs.!
If you come for a PMV and plan to seek work, bring work appropriate clothes - even if it is just one outfit. Sleeves is what the lady at the Dept. of Labor told me. And I have seen that to be the case at every place I've been (except bars).
Now, on my agenda for next week is the lovely Motor Vehicle Bureau. I think it is in Orange Grove, Christiansted. By the police station. I think.
Still looking for a roommate/roommates to share the 2br/2ba condo on the west side.
EVERYONE I have met here on the island has been wonderful! I have had no bad experiences. Dealt with people at the La Riene gas station, Sun Self Storage, Plaza Extra, The Avis (by the way you can subscribe for $19.00 pre-paid (money order) per month.)
I am looking for a vehicle - since I will be needing one. Thought that buying from a rental place would be good since they maintain to some degree the fleets. I can get a 2003 vehicle for under $8000. I thought that wasn't bad.
New cars from the dealership here seem to jack up the prices about $6000 +/- for I am assuming, destination charges.
Lots of potential for someone who is entreprenurial(I can do almost anything except spell) here on St. Croix. Rents for business are fairly inexpensive and there are needs.
That's all for now. I will update again later. Questions/Advise are all welcome. After all, I don't know much - I've only been here 15 days.
Looking forward to seeing more of you down here soon!
Linda

Linda,
If you're thinking of buying a car from a car rental agency, call Judy of Croix (773-2123). Tell Chris that Ric, they guy with the Triumph that spends a lot of time in the hospital, told you to call. They are good people.

The Motor Vehicle Bureau? If it's the Driver's licensing office that you mean you are looking for, it is not in Orange Grove. It is north of the airport. From the 4-lane highway, you turn north at the intersection midway between Airport Road East and Airport Road West. On the south side of that intersection, there is an office park and a national guard headquarters. When you turn north there, you drive for maybe half a mile or a little less and the police station is on the right. Go in the main entrance and tell the guard at the door that you are there to set up your written test for your driver's license. There is usually a long line to get to the window, as it's a one-stop shopping arrangement for a variety of legal needs, such as vehicle titles and annual license stickers, not just driver's licenses. It's not uncommon to stand in the line for 1-4 hours. You will be given a form to take to get an eye exam and physical exam from a local doctor at your expense. Off you go to schedule to see a doctor. Once you have the form signed off you go back to the DMV to schedule your written test. Stand in line again. Make sure you brought everything they told you to bring, including passport sized photos on a WHITE background... and make sure they are already cut apart (they do NOT have scissors). You will eventually get a test date, usually 2-3 weeks out, and receive a copy of the driver's manual (you will think a 10 year old wrote it) that you are told you must return when you take the written test. It is very common for 80% of the people in the room taking the written test to flunk it the first time they take it. Be prepared! Best of luck...
