Pre move visit!
Islander, Onika, Ronnie & the rest, I am making my pre move visit on Tuesday as you all have recommended. I am so excited; I will be there for 8 days and have a lot planned out. Thank you all for the advice you have given me, this visit should be very helpful. Seriously though, for those newer people, Onika, I am a tad bit worried, (please don’t laugh, hehe) about driving for the first time. I have been practicing in my neighborhood by driving on the left side; all has gone well so far. Any tricks I can use? Otherwise, where is the best tourist info booth on St Thomas? I have a list of over 100 things I will need to check into while I am there, but I am sure I will forget a few things. Might anyone recommend some obscure thing I may forget to look for? Perhaps, just that one odd thing that you forgot to look for when you all made you pre move visit? I did purchase a fairly good map that lists most roads, but is there someplace on the island that I can purchase a map that is excellent on all the small roads? Thanks again for all the help. We are moving in August and this trip should help finalize most of it.

Hello Kailek,
Driving on the left side isn't that difficult. LOL - said from someone who learnt to drive on the left side... but I imagine driving for you on the left is like me driving on the right.... takes a little while to get it... toughest thing is remembering what side of the road to turn onto when at an interspection - drive slow until you get the hang of it.
Best tourist booth... there is a small one in the airport - has information on the desk and walls. The cruise ship port location is a great one - its down in Havensight right where the ships come in. You can pick up a map there or see if the rental car company gives you one. No really really really detailed maps.... its not really necessary to have the small roads - drive down or up them see where they go - its ok - you will eventually end up somewhere on St. Thomas still... you will never see a sign saying You are now entering St. John!!! LOL!! Dont worry about it have fun and enjoy, learn lots so you can have a smooth move.

Kailek: Well, welcome to the Rock!
About driving: The easiest thing to remember is to hug the left side of the road. When you go around blind corners always think that there could be someone stopped dead in the strret and drive accordingly. And the best advice I received, from Ronnie, was- it's an island- you can't get lost, you'll eventually see something familiar. (Of course I drove around looking for familiar stuff all the time, and still do when I go over on the northside!) Maps aren't too helpful. You'll do better if you ask for directions and write them down. The roads are not well marked and most people call them a different name than on the map.
About what to do- Go to the grocery stores and see what is available. To the banks, pharmacies, K-Mart and Cost-U-Less...Stop by the hospital. Think of things you are going to need- laundromat? Gym? Library? Dry cleaners? Hardware stores? Movie theaters? Tell people you are moving here and ask for names that may be helpful to you (realtors, possible jobs, whatever). If you are positive and patient, you will get lots of help. If you start conversations with stuff like, "Back in Wyoming we didn't do things this way', you will get chupsed. Look, listen and learn...
