Pre Move Checklist?

We are visiting STX next summer and want to do it as prospective residents, not tourists. Does anyone have a definitive list of "Must Do" for this trip. We want to stay at a place that will be similar, if not the same, as we will on the real move- cost & (2)cat friendly- a temporary place so we can find an apartment. (we are not moving for 31 months, but it would be comforting to know we a have a temporary place lined up). Cook most of our own food, check out food markets, housing, business oppurtunities. Rent a car and drive and drive. Talk to locals. Visit the business licsencing office to know what we have to do for our bbq business. Look at some rental properties to get an idea. Are we on the right track- any suggestions?

Thanks!
Kendra & Kyle

K&K,
When Linda & I came for our premove visit, we did many of the things you mentioned. We visited several grocery stores. We walked around the shopping centers. We checked out the K-Mart. We also brought with us prices of staples that we use regularly so we could compare prices to stateside and set up an accurate budget.
You can look at housing, but I don't think many people will be interested in talking to you about it because your move is so far out. Keep in mind, the number of people who actually move here is much lower than those who say they are coming.
Feel free to email me with any questions you have. Read this board faithfully. Buy and memorize the "Settler's Handbook".

Goodluck,
Ric

Got the Settler's Handbook. Question, though, does K-Mart carry inexpensive starter furniture like Walmart does in the US?

There are plenty of places around Sunny Isle/Sion Farm/Peter's Rest that carry starter furniture.

I would also suggest driving around a lot to get a sense of where stores are and what the different neighborhoods are like.

Yep. Tables, chairs, futons, bookshelves, computer stations -- that sort of thing. Also look at Cost-u-less. And watch for moving sales in the paper.
