I heard that there are two homes being built on St. Thomas which are prefab homes with an octagon shape. They are supposed to be hurrican resistant. Anyone heard anything about this? or where they are being built?

I don't know about octagon, but there is a huge circular home being built out on the East End. You can see it up in the hills on your right just before you get to Paviillions and Pools (Pilsbury Heights -- maybe?) as you are headed toward Red Hook from Smith Bay.

I would be very interested in any information you can provide on this subject. We are looking at moving next year sometime and are just getting ideas for housing in the future, after we decide if we are going to stay for a long time. We have been looking at Deltec homes (there is a supplier on the island here is the link: http://www.caribbeanroundhouse.com/wst_page4.html). We have also been discussing a yurt which is very similar but on a much smaller scale. We are looking at St. Croix at this point. Any information anyone has on yurts or Deltec homes on the island would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Try the force 10 site they are not circular but are pre-fab and supposely will stand up to a level 5 hurricane. There are already some in stt and stj.

There are two completed Force-10 homes on STX with orders for a lot more. A developer has also just announced plans to build a large community of them on the island as pre-sales and other developers are inquiring. The one contractor on the island who has been licensed to erect them by the manufacturer for the past couple of years has now acquired the rights to be the distributor nationwide for the US and is looking at possibly setting up a manufacturing facility on Puerto Rico to supply the expected demand. Mississippi is looking at building these as FEMA and insurance approved homes for reconstructing some of the devastated neighborhoods that Katrina left behind. They may become quite mainstream if the current plans take off.

There is also a company called Oceansafe housing that is quite similar to force ten and to my knowledge alot less expensive. You can check out the website at
http://www.oceansafehousing.com/index.html
Both Force ten and Ocean Safe are guaranteed up to a category 4 hurricane.
Ocean safe are custom made housing, if you are interested... feel free to pm I can definitely give you more info on prices, steps etc.
There is currently a spec house being put up in Cotton Valley.
Take care,
Lindsay

Melissa: There is a house being built next door to Seaview Nursing and Rehab in Bolongo on St Thomas that I believe is a Caribbean Round House. It looks pretty cool and it is in a location that, if there is a hurricane, it will be tested. Let us pray for no tests.

I certainly hope it does not get tested! Thanks for the information though. From the pictures I saw on www.deltec.com they are some pretty tough houses!
