Praying for a miracle!!!!
Kia Orana (greetings) from the Cook Islands:
My husband, my Moluccan Cockatoo "Baby" and I sailed from Maui Hawaii to the South Pacific and have been living in the island of Rarotonga, Cook Islands (between Fiji and Tahiti) for the past five years. In the past few months we have survived five hurricanes, suffering damage to our home and business we are forced to relocate to the USA. My husband use to live in St thomas, he has secured a job as a boat captain with a local tour company and we will be relocating to St Thomas in May. My challenge is that not only am I a bird mother but I also have two and 1/2 dogs, Sammo (5), Annie (4) and Jessie (5) and I know that finding a place for all us will be close to a miracle. I count Jessie as 1/2 because we adopted her from the Rarotonga vet clinic a few years ago, she only has two legs (she was hit by a car) but she has adapted to her challenge and is totally normal and admirable little creature. Jessie is my inspiration when I feel the anguish of starting all over from scratch after living our dream in the South Pacific.
I am Peruvian by birth but for all of my adult life I have lived in Hawaii and the South Pacific. I know from experience that word of mouth is the greatest resource for finding what you need on an island. So I am putting this wish/request out there to the "coconut telegraph", if anyone out there hears of a good hearted landlord that allows pets and has an adequate one bedroom cottage/apartment with a fence in yard that will take my family of "South Pacific hurricane refuges ", PLEASE email me at pirateusvi@yahoo.com.
Thanks to all of you that take the time to read these message and respond. I can tell from reading the message board that there is lots of "Aloha" in VI and I will feel right at home.
Kia Manuaia (farewell)

P.S. I am accountant, currently doing contract work for HSBC
(Hong Kong Shanhai Banking Corp)in their trust division Cook Islands, I also will be looking for employment.
There is 'lots of aloha' here? What's that? Can we smoke it?
Aloha Marty:
Thanks for taking the time to answer. In my situation, I found your reply rather comical.
Sounds like we come from different hemispheres and an explanation would be a waste of time.
Maybe it is best I keep my prayers to myself.
Kind regards,
Giovana
Were you the ones that had the boat that your husband built that looked like an old pirate ship?
If so, we met you in Fiji at Marlin Bay resort when you stoped for dinner.
Yes, that was us. Funny, seems like such a long time ... the beginning of a dream that has turned into a nightmare.
Thanks for saying hello.
Giovana
Hello Giovana,
There is sense of Aloha in the VI. Certainly different then that of Hawaii but similar all the same. Sorry to hear of your misfortune with the storms.
For information on bringing in your Cockatoo you might call the Dept. of Agriculture. Dr. Bradford was the vet there last year, ask for her. If she isn't there then just ask for help/laws/regulations on birds; just to see if there are any special regulations. (340)774-5182.
Finding an apartment with 3 dogs and a Cockatoo (I mention the Cockatoo also because I know they aren't the quietest pets 🙂 at least the ones I have been around weren't quiet) isn't going to be easy... however its not impossiable. Also May is getting to off season so there will be more openings for apartments. Word of mouth is big in the islands as you mentioned - hopefully if anyone has any pet friendly landlord suggestions for St. Thomas they will make them.
You should be able to find work in accounting. If you want to continue working in banking you might try the VI banking web site http://www.vibank.org/ for lists of banks and info. Businesses, resorts have accounting dept. so those are options too.
All the best with your plans, keep us posted on the progress.
