Regardless of target pest it was used improperly since it is not labeled for use within dwellings. I have used methyl bromide before and there really is not better soil sterilants available. People misusing pesticides are the problem. Not the actual chemical. So you may ask, why do you need a soil sterilant? Weed seeds can lay dormant for years. At Michigan State they had an ongoing weed seed viability experiment showing some weed seeds are viable 50+ years. If you make these seeds unable to germinate you can reduce the amount of post emergent herbicides used. it looks like the family is improving and will soon be having even more disposable cash

heard someones opinion this morning on the vibe. they stated they thought something was fishy with this whole situation.

the room was fumigated 4 days before they showed up, no one else had any issues ( dont know if anyone else was staying there or not ) the chemical had been used on stx in a few places and no one had any problems.

the family supposedly showed up at the hospital with suitcases. the mother was never in any real danger. the father and kids were hit hard with this poisoning.

it was an interesting observation.

any new updates

St John Rescue arranged for them to get to hospital. Regardless of whether no one else has been affected, the pesticide is restricted from use in residences.

I guess that caller thinks that the sons are faking being unconscious (as of 2 days ago).

And that the mother is in a rehabilitation facility just for fun ...

I'm not going to lie... My first instinct when I heard this story was one parent tried to off the other and the kids. It is just the jaded world we live in. Still would not be surprised if after investigation it was the case

Now that you've confessed, I will, too. But the reporter left many details out in the initial story, so sketchy details make you wonder.

Now that we have more facts, we can see how harmful the chemical is. It is truly a tragedy that those kids are still unconscious.

i agree ms411. it was just an observation that was made. it was an interesting observation based on what this person said. when some observations get made, you begin to wonder.

CNN is running the story with updates today. Supposedly one boy has brain damage and the father can't speak, though they didn't say why.

The Terminus office here is not a franchise so corporate will probably be held liable.

The mother must be beside herself.

I heard some Terminix employees flew to CDC in Atlanta for interviews/testimony.

Thank goodness EPA was here when this occurred. Response seemed to be very rapid from all on island emergency personnel.

By the Chem data sheet it should be easy enough to see through body fluid samples if they were indeed exposed. Use of outlawed chemicals here isn't uncommon.... I know of quite a few places in STT where you can get Beygone (sp?) which is legal in BVI but not here. I know people that have bought in Tortola and had no problem getting it through US Customs.....

The company that has been identified as doing the work should have had people better trained in application of stuff, and regardless should NEVER have been using it as a fumigant.

I also heard courts have subpoenaed records from other pesticide companies. I think they have 5 business days to produce them, which would be some day next week. The domino affect from somebody else's error.

Here's a link to the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for methyl bromide if anyone is interested. Nasty stuff!

Used it before. If someone actually used it in an indoor space they and company should be charged criminally.

They are building a case for criminal charges, and seem to be carefully collecting evidence and building their case. The fact that the hospital made a quick diagnosis does not bode well for Terminix, IMO. I also see pesticide courses advertised in the paper from time to time. Are these mandatory to keep your license? Did Terminix attend? Did the building contractor not use appropriate wood so needed constant treatment?

Good example of why you should seek out Eco accommodations.

I didn't see anything other MAY be caused by pesticides..

This explains VI pesticide applicators.
Very similar to States.
The big difference is States had registered technician license. Which meant they were not permitted to buy RUPs (restricted use pesticides). Most pest control companies in States only required registered technician licence. As long as a person with a commercial pesticide license was on site they could use RUPs.. There really aren't many RUPs I've ever used.

And I think Terminix had a person with commercial pesticide license. That person possibly accompanied someone else when doing the application.

It looks like Terminix has been flagged and fined numerous times in the past for unsafe use of methyl bromide. With regards to the current case, criminal proceedings have started. If i were in the jury in the civil case, I'd hit Terminix with huge punitive damages.
