Power out
I rarely use the genny for daytime outages unless I have working pending that needs to get done and I need computer and internet access but generator use has become an integral part of living in the VI due to the numerous outages we must endure thruout the year, much less after a storm of any significance.
I managed to start my generator this morning. The freezer is running and we have water. I have two large LPG tanks for running generator. That should get me another day.. Hopefully power will come back by then.
WAPA was very quick to respond by email.
They were not aware of the problem!!!
My generator happy neighbors never bothered calling WAPA. One generator run out of gas or shut down for other reasons. The other neighbor is still running. I run the freezer for 2 hours and shut down to save LPG.
I would not like to be on Titanic with bunch of islanders. Most seem to be in denial and idle.
I never worry about WAPA outages anymore. With a reliable generator, its only a very small inconvenience to start it. Once its warmed up, it could run for days. I was watching Netflix and cooking a pizza while the neighborhood was in blackness last night. I kept the volume on the home theater down so as not to piss them off.
I always call about outages.
Got WAPA on speed dial.
If it's a localized outage, they're often unaware.
Much prefer silence to the sound of generator.
This outage affected four houses only. I was the only one that called. WAPA people questioned why nobody else called. The crew was onsite within 2 hours. Turned out it was a vine growing on the wires. They cleaned up just 10% of vine. It will be back in 2 weeks. The WAPA guys have a guaranteed job security. Power will be out again in my corner. They will come back and prune some more vine. The cycle will continue.
Spray a little RoundUp solution on the vine and it'll kill it off. (Please, Monsanto-haters, save the lectures ...)
Yeah man, if you don't do the job right it has to be re done-job security. Just like pothole repair.;)

That could be takes as interference with WAPA Union turf and their collective bargaining agreement. But than again action is better then inaction. Spray it is!
Why use round up when you can use an organic weed killer?

Because if you want a long lasting solution, "At the right strength this organic weed killer will kill the leaves of any plant it comes in contact with, but not the roots.
Because of this it is most effective on young weeds which don’t have enough energy stored in their roots to make a successful comeback. Repeated applications will be needed to permanently disable more established weeds"
I've tried this and similar for vines, etc. and know how ineffectual it is.
Vinegar is more toxic than glyphosate. Lol.
A more effective recipe:
1 gallon vinegar (30% range)
2 cups Epsom Salt
1/4 cup Dawn (or other cheap detergent)
I use this in the greenhouse all of the time on young weeds and grasses that sprout up.
Can't use any of the others because particles will drift no matter how careful you are.
Not effective on woody vines nor bulb/corm weeds.
Rather than spraying round-up for vines and unwanted plants, I will cut them flush with the ground and then pain concentrated round-up on the stump. Works great on poison ivy, wisteria, etc. Also effective on tree/shrub stumps; 9-12 months stump is done and can be easily removed. The benefit here is the direct application eliminates over-spray and drift.

Glyphosate is not very effective on woody vines. Picloram is much more effective, and it too can be brushed on flush cuttings to avoid hitting non target species.
Woody Vines....great porn star name.
I couldn't believe that we didn't lose power at all during or after the rain. I was shocked.
We do have a large tree broken and hanging on the lines - and there are actual lines and a big round... transformer? dangling in water in the middle of the road in the rainforest. I have called and left messages and emailed. No one has answered. Its been there for three days now. It looks dangerous especially the lines in the water.
I was told that WAPA was off for carnival.. not sure if thats true but I feel that is a business that needs to be open - while I get the whole "don't stop the carnival" I feel that the safety of the citizens here should trump the party.

The last day of STT Carnival was Saturday 30th, we had a power outage on STT on the 30th and WAPA crews were right on it so what you were told was obviously incorrect. The coconut telegraph's like that ... facts merely irrelevant.
If you go on WAPA website and fill out "contact us" form WAPA response was immediate. The crew was was here in 2-3 hours. Perhaps it helps living next to superior court judge and two attorneys. JK.
Are you not STT?
