Well our first pots were cheapies and are toast. Hunny cant understand why not to use metal utensils in them. Whats the best type of pots and pans that wont rust down here? We've always had the teflon coated kind back in AZ but here it seems they just get scratched and rust out real bad. I was gong to order some from Amazon unless someone knows of a more reasonable place on island. STT.

Thanks in advance.

Aluminum or high quality stainless steel pots and pans won't rust.

Caphalon is an excellent product line for here also the heavy metal pots that are coated in ceramic or some kind of porcelain are fine. I use cast iron almost exclusively but it would rust if not cared for but won't ever become toast.

The restaurant supply store in Four Winds- used to be called NACO, but it may have changed names- has pretty good kitchenware. It is behind the Splash and Dash, next to the police station.

I've had great luck with Revere Ware Stainless pots and pans with the copper bottoms. Have had them down here for over 10+ yrs.

We have Calphalon and also these cheap pots from Walmart (and yes, they will still ship them here)

Love them, and no rust at all...:-)

Thanks all! East ender: I will check them out.

Copper bottoms may be a good idea too. The bottoms of our got black and left that everywhere you would sit them down. We do like to use out pots on the grill too, having a side burner I don't have to run in and out. Maybe that's where the black came from.
Thanks!

Thanks! Good read... Gonna do stainless still with copper bottoms, AND get bamboo utensils. Makes sense.

We are definatly trying to be healthier on island. Pretty sure I've lost at least 10lbs. Garden is REALLY helping! It's HUGE now! We have squash that's almost ready for picking, been using cilantro almost every day (I planted a lot we LOVE cilantro) used lemon basil in bruschetta for dinner yesterday, and haven't bought lettuce in weeks. I still have caterpillars really bad thou. I've been meaning to get to HD to get that Organicide but pulled a muscle in my back so haven't done much and have a few snorkel tours next week so im resting. I did plant some broccoli and mini basil today thou.

Does anyone else have a problem with rusting pots and pans? I'm really curious as in 30 years, various island locations (south, east and north) the only pan that ever rusted on me was a strainer insert. I used that daily at the pub for steaming veggies and consistently had to scrub it with a Brillo pad to remove the stains. As long as I keep my cast iron pans well seasoned they're fine too. The rest of my regular pots and pans are a real mix and match medley - a few with copper bottoms but otherwise nothing special. I can't remember the last time I actually purchased anything new so maybe the newer cheap ones are more prone to rusting? :S

These were cheapies. I'm sure you've all seen them. The red 3 set. Have them at Kmart and also cash and carry for like $20. The black inside part on te bottom of the sides started coming off and rusting. One wash revealed the rust had gone under the black coating. The pans are starting to show it now too. That's what I get for $20 pans I guess.

Good to know about the cast iron! I was just thinking about that today, since I use both mine almost exclusively over any other saute pan I have!

I, too, have never had pots and pans rust, and what we have came from KMart years ago. I think it's Revere stainless, but I also have a non stick pan for eggs, and it hasn't rusted. Also have cast iron that I oil every now and then. Haven't used aluminum in years.

I bought a Saladmaster set almost 40 years ago. They still look new! Just need to use the poltice on them every now and again to be rid of the sometimes black soot on the bottoms. Thet advertised them as surgical steel. Looks like they are making them out of titanium now. I have seen the se I have for sale on eBay as they don't age. Don't know if they have a dealer here now. The were pricey, but gave you a payment plan!

I did a raised bed, pre made from Home Depot for $80. Cedar and no tool assembly 8'x4'. You can go cheaper, hit up the dump for old tires or if you're felling handy you can ask places like Home Depot of you can have some pallets and break them down and rebuild. IMO the pre made was nice because it was fast to assemble, sometimes I get lazy lol. I bought 12 bags of cheap topsoil and 2 of the big square shaped compressed potting soil. Threw in a BUNCH of veggies and herb seeds, watered - got lots of rain that week which helped and in a week I had shoots up. Its producing a BUNCh of stuff now, in only about a couple months time. Im AMAZED at the speed of growth actually. I haven't bought lettuce or cilantro in a few weeks, made some killer bruschetta with lemon basil from the garden and now we have squash which I just picked today. Also had to do some thinning of my carrots so nibbled on some mini carrots as I pulled them out lol. my ORANGELO WATERMOLON IS BLOOMING!! Its soooooooooo good. My grandma used to sell hers for like $40 each! :O

I gotta get planting some tomato, I have 6 types of seeds. Maybe this weekend. I ordered my seeds from baker creek heirlooms. I also should add that I put up garden stakes and bird net all around to keep iggys out. I will say that I am always shocked at the flavor from the things from my garden. The cilantro is waaayyyy stronger than any ive ever bought and the lemon basil is too, everything just tastes better.

Heres the one I did, they also have a 4x4 single. I did the double and glad I did, a single would be overgrown easily. Yesterday I ripped out all my bunching onions, they werent doing much and I didnt like the taste and planted mini basil and broccoli.

I found a HUGE slug just a while ago while out picking lettuce for BLTs. YUM!!!!! LOL. I did finally find the Organicide from HD today. Gonna try it tomorrow as theres a BUNCH of caterpillars, nocturnal - I thought that was odd.

Next I am thinking about doing a compost pot but IDK, seems like too much work lol. I heard that compost tea is the bees knees 😉 I have happy frog organic fertilizer but haven't used it yet.

Heres my garden planted around Feb 7th:
