Possible Relocation
I live in South Carolina now (for the past year) but I am from Michigan myself.
Have been offered a pretty good job by Marriott. (Frenchman's)
I have never been to St. Thomas and not sure what to do. There is not a lot you can find out on-line unless you are just vacationing.
I have 2 dogs and a 4yr old child.
Want to be VERY safe of course having him.
Want to live as close to work as possible.
Need a good school for him.
So, any tips. What kind of info do you have.
If I move there, what would I be gaining or possibly giving up?
Thanks for any help.
I am going to STT for a few days thru Marriott to help out on a task force. Are you with Sales, Marketing, ops? I am also originally from Michigan, I moved to Florida and have been here the last 10 years. I had moved back after the first 30 days because I hated the heat, fires, hurricanes and you name it. I actually went thru all that in the first 30 days! I think it would be an easier relo if you were more acclimated to a tropical area. It's a big change from North to South.
Being from Michigan, I can say it is fun to be here and talk with others from home state. Nothing wrong with the weather here. As a matter of fact, Michigan summers are sweltering compared to this heat here. Michigan high humidity is awful. I have been here on St. Croix so for a year. Can't tell you about relocating on St Thomas.
Good luck
Renee the recruiter told me they were sending task force people there. Well, I could possibly be the Sr Admin Manager. What are you going there for? Are you in Michigan now or Florida? Where exactly are you from? I grew up in Warren. I have been in South Carolina the last year and yes, it is definitely a huge culture shock except I like the weather. Bugs, not that is another thing. You could walk the cockroaches on a leash here.
So have you been to St. Thomas?
This is too funny, I am going to help out in the contracts for a few days until the new Sam is hired. I live in Orlando and work at the Horizons site. I also lived in Warren (9 and van dyke) for a year. I was born in Mt. Clemens, raised in Sterling Heights. After I married (husband from St. Clair Shores) we moved to Romeo (just passed 33 mile) then up north to Lupton (small town 30 mins from West Branch).
Anyway, the first time I saw a cockroach down here I thought I would have a stroke! Now, I could stomp on them without a care, spiders still get me though. I have never been to STT, but I heard it was beautiful, but many things to take into consideration before you go. It's very exciting and scary at that same time, but you only live once.
What brought you there?
So what issue's do you have there compared to Michigan. What is good?
well, I can name a million things about Michigan that I love, but here it is a place that needs to grow on you and you find enjoyment in smaller things. A cool night, a morning with out really bad humidity and the sunsets are beautiful. I am a true Northerner at heart, but I had a bad car accident on I-69 going north one winter and I just could not bring myself to get comfortable driving in the snow again. I wasn't all banged up or anything, my two oldest (then 5 and 6) kids were with me at the time, it was strictly emotional. Scared me to death.
Here you have the fire ants, so no sitting in the grass and it is not soft anyway like back home, it is rough and tough to be able to grow here. The bugs are pretty bad but I still think the mosquitoes are worse in northern Michigan. The first "real" hurricane can teach you to pray real quick. But I did figure out one thing, no matter where you live it is up to you to make it a home. You have to meet people and rebuild your community ties, church, neighbors....everything.
I still miss Michigan, I always wanted to move to Mackinaw Island. So you can only imagine how weird it is for me to be here, BUT I have found something here, not sure what, however it has kept me here for 10 years now.
This is so crazy. My Mom lives in Romeo, 32 and Van Dyke.
Lived on 12 and Ryan myself.
Personally I HATE the cold!
Had to drive 696 from Warren to Novi daily. Can't believe I did not just jump off a bridge.
My fathers parent lived in St Clair Shores for about 40 years, I know that area also.
I have fire ants here to and yes the grass, YUCK!
But the ocean is an hour away.
Have house sprayed every 3 months so not to many worries about the bugs until I go outside of course.
I think I would like to live in Florida. I used to go every summer and stay with my great grandparents and come home with the skin peeling off my body. Don't think I ever got all the sand out of my bathing suit.
So what do you do for the Marriott? Anything there for me?
I am the sales administration manager for the contracts at Horizons. I have been there for over 7 years now, I would love the St Thomas opportunity, but I am going to be a Grandma for the first time this coming June!
Are you with Marriott now?
No, not yet. I have been looking into a few opportunities with the company.
I have been in the lovely mortgage biz the last 15 yrs. I think it is time to make a little change in the career path.
The only problem I have come across so far is the pay. Some jobs are ok and some jobs pay are just funny!
Not to mention that I can't really work nights or weekends because it is just me and my 4 yr old Cody. (plus the zoo)
2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 birds and now hermit crabs from the ocean that are set up in my living room.
Well keep an ear out for me where you are at in case something comes up.
Manager: office, financial, etc....(but I don't do accounting)I probably need to learn though!
yeah, that indrusty is tough now. Marriott is a great company to work for. Hope everything works out for you.
Where are you from in Michigan?
What took you to St. Croix?
I forgot to ask you. Did you happen to know who it was that left after a year in that position? She was supposed to be there 2 years.
Hello,
I just noticed your last messages. I am living in Florida not STX, and the last manager I believe had some issues with a boyfriend or something.
I know. There was someone "Marlene" who commented that was from St. Croix.
