possible relocation

I have recently put in my resume to a company that is expanding, and is going to move part of its operation to St. Croix. I got a response from the entity, and am now going to have to consider really moving there. Although exciting, at my age (47) it is also alot to consider as it would be a permanent move. I do appreciate all I have read on this web site, and input from islander, HC, Eastender, and the countless others who seem to have so much insight of island living.

I guess I am writing to find out more about some good first steps to take in my consideration of moving. The problem is, given my industry, I probably will not get to make a "visit" to the islands first. Any suggestions?

Talk to you soon

We are from the DFW area. I noticed you 2 were from the Austin area. I dearly love the hill country. Anyway, I would be pleased to share information with you.

Austin really is a beautiful place...crazy to leave but the VI's are much better:-)

Have you just started your research? I highly recommend purchasing the Settlers Handbook from this website, it's very informative.

email me at jessmorse@austin.rr.com if you would like to chat in more detail regarding your relocation....

Hello Mike,

Have your read the What to Expect stories on this site, there are 9 of them, all written by folks who moved to the VI from the mainland - check those out for tips and suggestions. Your best bet for getting advice and suggestions is to ask questions - even if you have 20+ questions - ask them all, the key to enlightenment is not in the answer but in the question!! Very open questions are harder to answer.

In any case where you might start - read, research, ask questions - get as much information as you can so you have as informed and accurate a picture as possiable. Write down all the pros and cons to moving or not moving. If you have a family, kids - get them involved. Make a list of the things you do daily, weekly on weekends, on holidays that you enjoy, that are part of you and your life - whethers its a special coffee shop or a neighborhood bbq on the 4th of July... ask the folks on this board whether the things you enjoy are available here in the VI - that way you can sort of figure out what you would be giving up and you can determine whether you want to give up those things and what is available here that might replace the activities you enjoy presently. Determine the cost of moving and what you would move? Good Luck.

Thank you for your response. Gave us a lot to think about. We have been considering, and have decided that it would depend on our offer. (needless to say) We have all of those aforementioned things to think about (children, grandchildren, parents) without which our personalities are such that we would just about jump up and do it without a second thought because we love new experiences, I have lived in a warmer climate(I dont want to insult anyone by calling south florida tropical) and I loved every minute of it.
I will definately read the section you suggested, and I already have MORE than 20 questions, but will wait till I know more about what our possibilities are.

Once again, thank you.

Mike

Mike,

Could I ask what the name of the company is you are referring to? I'm doing my research on moving down there also and am always looking for more info on possible employment opportunities.

Thanks!
