Possible QUICK move
Good morning! So after 10 years and a couple of quick visits, we may FINALLY be making the move to STX for a 5 month period, which I am counting as an extended real PMV and not just a fun-time vacation as I MAY have obtained a 5 month contract to work on the westend of the island. Here's the rub. After the job offer is submitted the clock starts ticking and I have 30 days to start my new job. That means that I have to secure furnished housing that will accomadate myself, my hubby and 2 small weiner dogs, that will be close to my place of employment, sooner rather than later. In addition, I do not want to ship my van right now, as I'm trying to expidite this move on a budget but will need a vehicle as soon as we arrive. I have been a member of this board for many years now and hope someone here has any leads or suggestions as I feverosly work to get everything in place. Thanks so much!
Theresa

there are a few places that sell used vehicles but they might be more than you are looking to spend-would it be feasible for you to use one of the rental agencies?
will it be too hot for the dogs to fly at this time of year? are they on the no fly list?
My recommendation is for one of you to come first and secure a place to live and then the other follow with the dogs. Until you get settled, rent a vehicle. However nice the landlord may seem to be and however nice the photographs look it's a really bad idea to rent anything sight unseen. Lots of people do as I described above. Good luck!

Thank you for the quick reply. The dogs always fly as carry on, in cabin with us. (They are miniatures ; )
You can rule out the possibility of renting a condo if you have dogs. Most condos on STX do not allow pets, and if they do, it's for the owners only, and then only 1 animal.
Ok. Full panic mode now. I GOT THE JOB!!! Have to be on island and ready for work in 30 days!!!
Have you considered coming separately as mentioned earlier? It really is the least panic method!
Check out Craiglist, That is how i found my house.... Many times you are dealing with the owner and it can sometimes be easier. Yes there are scams but there are usually red flags.
Let a realtor help you with your search.
It's not going to cost you anything and you'll get valuable information and help.
Realtor, private landlord or whatever - taking something sight unseen is just not recommended.
Congrats to you! I can second the suggestion of Pam at Coldwell Banker - she found me a very affordable rental for a month last summer at Mill Harbour. Now I'm happy to share a similar quick move story!
After being an occasional poster on this forum for a couple of years and many pmv's, I just got word that I got a teaching position!!
OT, I'm encouraged to see your advice here about coming down to find a place then bringing others/animals/household goods on a separate trip. My husband and I are coming July 12 and I had been thinking I should just put the trip off and make mine a one way closer to school starting back, but I think coming early to find a place to rent and maybe buy a cheap car would be a good idea.
I have to thank all the regulars here for showing us many facets of island life that we may not have thought of....good and bad.
I knew when I saw a dolphin on a dive last Thanksgiving that it was a good omen!

I agree that sight unseen is unwise. I am in discussions with the husband as to how to proceed. Thought that we would have a little more breathing room, as I need to give 30 days notice at my current employment, so timing is going to be tricky.
I have, however, rented several places, in several locations, sight unseen (travel nurse for 5 years) with only a couple mishaps. If that's the only solution, then I will just have to do my due diligence best I can remotely. Hopefully, that won't be the case.
Good luck to you for an easy transition.
Thank you Alana!
Maybe splurge on a weekly vacation rental and look while on island?
On the flip side Villa Morales (West end) has very low cost guest house rooms, motel like, no TV or phone if you need something to get into for the first few days while you take the realtor taxi ride. Either way best advise is to get into something temporary until finding something to rent longer term and bringing he dogs down later after finding something permanent is the smart thing to do.
