Possible move to St. Croix
It looks like I may be offered a position on St. Croix and my wife and I are debating moving there from the Washington, D.C. suburbs. I really love the idea of living at the beach and though my wife isn't such an outdoors person, she would love the warm weather. We're still young (31 and 29) but it would mean doing some uprooting for a rather unknown move. We're also hoping to start a family in the near future and are curious as to what that would be like on the island. Any advice on any of the above subjects?
Do it while you are young. My wife and I are doing it at 55 and just the physical part of this move has proved taxing to us. I can't convice her that I can't lift as much as I could 20 years ago. As far as your wife not being the outdoors type, I don't think that will be a problem. The beaches are beautiful and there are a number of other things to do on the island.
You will hear that crime is a problem on STX. Compared to the crime rate in DC and other big cities, crime is very low on the island. I STRONGLY recommend the two of you come down for a week or two. Spend some time doing the tourist thing. Also spend some time looking at the stores, apartments or real estate, and other things you will need for everyday living. Also, at the top of this board, you can purchase the Settler's Handbook. Buy it and memorize it.
If you have an opportunity to come to the Virgins, take it. Worst case is you all will not like it and move back. That's a heck of a lot better than spending the next 50 years wondering what it would have been like if you had tried it. My son who lived in STT (and hated it) and now lives in Playa del Carmen, MX has said many times, "if you have to work anyway, why not do it in paradise."
Good luck in your decision. You are in the right message board to get the answers you need.
Thanks for the info Ric. Good luck with your move. We'll let you know what we decide.
hi,
I am thinking of relocating to St Croix also. I am originally from RI. I am 31, my husband to be is 28. I would be coming from Key Largo. I would work at the hospital, and i wanted to know what kind of things there are to do in St. Croix (besides the beach) I ordered the handbook, thanks. Hasn't come in the mail yet, though.(slow?) i find that where i live now (Florida Keys) I cannot find any other normal people- everybody drinks/smokes/ and has 3 teeth missing. (i don't mean to put the place down-sorry) But, I am looking for a place where i could meet intelligent people and nice friends and live my life the "laid back" way. What is it like there?
And they don't take state taxes out of your paycheck?
Haha... flashbacks from the movie ADAPTATION based on your assessment of the Florida keys. Now I'm gonna have nightmares about the orchid thief!! Go see the movie if you haven't...
I haven't spent much time on STX, but I did really enjoy my visit and met some nice people. My sister went there twice (once with Earthwatch, then her honeymoon) and loved it. I'm sure you will meet nice people, just have realistic expectations about how quickly your circle of friends will develop. Like any new environment you will meet people here and there and after a few months you'll have a good network. But rarely does this happen overnight, you've got to be a little patient. Your job will help you meet people too.
Keri, Regular mail takes maybe 5-7 days (sometimes longer)... priority should take maybe 3-5 days depending on the day it was sent (longer amount including weekends usually) if its been a week or more since you got notice of it being processed please drop me an e-mail so that I can forward it to the right folks and have them look into it for you.

Thanks!!!!! Will let you know....
I dont agree with the statement that crime on STX isnt as BAD as DC or NY.
If you are really interested in an eye opening discovery, compare the crime rates.
Take the number of reported crimes of each city and divide by the population.
You also have to take into account that if the percentages are even similar, that your chances of being a victim are much higher in a low population situation. Not to mention the fact that you are stuck every night on the same rock as the degenerates that would rather stick a gun to your head than let you walk with cash in your pocket.
I have heard a few too many things from people who moved from STX.
