Possible move soon
I have gotten a lot of great information from everyone on this board regarding my possible move to the Islands (St Thomas). I plan on coming down for at least a month to get a feel. I was wondering how difficult it would be to get a job right away with a hospitality tourism degree right away? I have applied to a few jobs from the states but don't feel as strongly considered as I don't live there yet... I have a lot of experience but am worried about finding employment quickly.
Also how difficult will it be for me to get around without a true form of transportation. Is that a big issue for newcomers? Any and all information would be great.
No vehicle is very limiting, imo.
Yes, plenty of resorts will dismiss applications without a local address despite qualifications (because they won't pay relocation, won't pay for you to come interview, etc). It's still worth a shot to keep applying so I would still try as I'm unsure of your experience and there is a need for highly qualified individuals so there could be an exception. Perhaps you could mention in your cover letter your plan to move to island.
Transportation depends on where you live. If you're on the safari route you shouldn't have a problem.
I didn't mention the safaris because I'm not sure they will accommodate green. Safaris run on specific routes, like busses. They will be fine if you work a conventional shift, but they don't run at night.
You need a true form of transportation. It is difficult without.
It will be almost impossible to get around without a vehicle here unless you are wealthy and can afford to take a taxi every where you go. Now if you are staying in an area near the bus route then it may not be as bad. You have to realize, you are coming to an island with limited opportunities. So yes, it could take you a while to get a job unless you want to work in the food or service industry.
Lack of your own transportation severely limits where you live, public transportation is limited and highly unreliable, and relying on taxis will cost you an arm and a leg.
Employers here rarely even respond to applications from people not already living here. Many have "the dream" but never actually make it here while the attrition rate of "newbies" is very high. I think once you get here you'll quickly see the obstacles first hand and will be better equipped to make a decision. Good luck!
thank you everyone for the valuable information. I have been able to learn so much from everyone posting on these message boards. Cheers.
