Possible alternative to local ISPs (if available here???)
One of the satellite internet companies on STX is Paradise Satellite 719-2488. They offer broadband service via a company called HughesNet (formerly DirecWay).
for satellite internet, you need a large dish installed. This generally means you have to be living in a house that you own or that you have a landlord who is willing to let you pay for the install and possibly leave the dish for him when you vacate. It's pretty expensive, too.
I just bought my dish for hughesnet........$1275.00 and $59 a month....works great but looks like a NASA sub station with my other dish.
I've got 3 dishes in my yard and am planning on putting in a 4th for additional DishNetwork HD tv stations. Looking like NASA is just another part of living in the islands. It's a running joke to be able to say "my dish farm is bigger than yours!" 🙂
