positive feedback
I've visited this board a number of times, and rarely find any positive feedback on moving to the islands. My family and I are contemplating the move, and I was just wondering is there any good to moving there?
Also, what are the hospitals, private doctors, and schools like on St. Thomas?
Sunny, I don't know what you mean by no positive feedback. We moved to St. Croix 10 months ago, like it and plan to stay.
What you do find are people who have already moved here telling you:
VISIT FIRST
PLAN CAREFULLY
HAVE MONEY SAVED
That's not the same and being negative, it's realistic. We try to paint a picture that really helps those who think they'd like to try the island life.
Good Luck
It's funny b/c so often we are accused of misleading visitors to the board by painting a positive and (what some call) "unrealistic" picture of life in the VI!
Sunny, there is much good here! But, as Linda J stated, you will be well-advised to plan, plan, plan and research, research, research!
Check out the Moving stories (found by linking from the front page at vinow.com) and use the search engine on this site, then come back and ask your specific questions. We will be more than glad to help and we promise, we'll try to give you a fair and balanced impression of the VI.

Sunny,
I am also considering a move to USVI, STT in particular. I went there last week to scope it out. I left there with mixed feelings, but the end result is that I am still considering the move.
My husband & I have a 2 year old daughter, and are trying for another, so schools are an important consideration. I did a fair amount of research on the various private schools during my trip, and will be posting a detailed summary of my "findings" later today.

Sunny,
My husband and I are moving in August to St. John. I, too have felt discouraged by this website but I still visit everyday. I have found that MOST of the people on this message board are being realistic while others are pretty harsh. We're keeping a positive attitude!! Good luck to you! Ultimately, you only live once so GO FOR IT!!!
Cheers!
Amanda
I know lots of people whose children have grown up on one of the Islands. They are all normal! What is normal anyway? The private schools are quite good. Island life is not for everyone but I lived there for 7 years and never ever wished I hadn't done it. I plan to go back to STX next year. I will retire there. I can't say enough wonderful things about STX.Each of us has our preference of islands. Mine is STX. It is a personal choice. I live in Los Angeles so lets really talk crime! Katie
Sunny,
My wife and I have now been here for 3 weeks and we absolutely love it. I have not posted much on my move because I feel like I cheated the system in that my wifes company took care of everything. Our car was delivered to us last friday, with new tags and registration so I did not get to experience the thrills of the local DMV. My wife and I grew up as military brats moving all over the world so adapting here has been easy for both of us since we are both well versed in being flexible. I have encountered far more friendly people than rude. Our search for a new home has been our greatest adjustment. The real estate market here is tight and you have to be patient to find what you want. We do not have children but I have been researching the schools because my wife will be recruiting people where schools will be an issue. The private schools are great but I have been warned that in some cases you need to get on a waiting list as early as possible. Every child is of course different, but I can tell you that I would of had no problem living here on St. Thomas when I was growing up.
I too read this board frequently, starting six months prior to our move. You do get conflicting views which is natural. Our move has been smooth and we have encountered delightful people. I can see how moving here at a young age to experience the caribbean dream would be tough. I admire those who are willing to take that leap of faith to come here. We know coming in that we will be here 3-5 yrs and then on to the next adventure. My only advice would be to come down and decide for yourself and take everything you read on this board with a grain of salt.
Katie, LA actually has a lower per capita murder rate than STX.
But hey, they're actually both still great places to live!
