Hey,

My fiance and I are thinking of moving to St. Croix for a little change of life pace. We're living in Chicago right now and can't take it anymore. We'll probably head down there in about a month or so to check it all out. My fiance works in a spa here and I work in the restaurant business. wondering how tough it is to get jobs down there being from the states and all that...

Any suggestions or advice on job searches and living situations would be great.

Thanks,

dean in chicago

jj,

I'm having a hard time picking up what your trying to lay down, are you trying to say that you had a bad experience on St. Croix? Now, you said you were drinking a cup of coffee and it was what? Oh, half empty....how about you add something that you liked about the place...

Wondering if you were just playing or for real. Can you elaborate?
Because being an ex-cop from NYC, I have both guns and vest...do I really need to pack them? -dean

I don't know what the above poster's motivation is, but with no explanation I assume he is a spammer. St Croix and St Thomas have had a recent problem with violent crime. It is a problem that must be addressed by the government. However I always feel very safe in St Croix. I have never been in a situation where I felt uncomfortable or threatened. I do not go out and party late or try to buy drugs or put myself in places where bad guys hang out. You will feel much safer here than in most of Chicago anytime. You will see when you get here that it is a very safe place. People understandable get upset when there are problems in paradise. We need to demand that the government do what is necessary to control the small criminal element in the USVI.

My wife and I are in the process of moving to STX. We will arrive on the island tomorrow. We shipped two cars via Tropical. They couldn't have made it easier. We decided to do a little touristing in South Beach before coming over. We're staying at Waves at Cane Bay while we look for an apartment.

We are not particularly worried about crime. Compared to the big cities on the mainland, it's relatively insignificant. Most of it appears to be drug related. If you aren't into the drug scene, it shouldn't be a problem. STX seems to get a bad rap compared to STT and STJ. It's different from those two islands, but different isn't necessarily bad. Buy the Settler's Handbook. Read the stuff at the top of the board. It will all prove helpful. Don't let anyone talk you out of checking out STX as a place to live.

Well, you can't really compare STJ to any of the other two in practically anything.
From the former Crucians that have moved to STJ, I have heard some bad stories.
Maybe they had bad luck. I haven't really felt unsafe on STT visits but i am rarely there after dark, either. There is a certain amount of drug trade on the islands and being round that is dangerous. But small island with a fairly decent sized drug trade isnt, IMO, a place to raise children. Actually, I don't think the islands, even STJ would be a great place to raise children but that is just my view. Many have done it and their kids turned out great but it isnt good when one of the major pastimes is catching chickens and strangling them.

Ok Chris... 🙂 I know its your opinion and thats cool... BUT as a person who was raised in the Virgin Islands I have to of course comment on what you wrote. Although I do recall my uncle killing some chicken that he had on his property for the purpose of laying eggs and eating fresh chicken... I have never myself or known anyone who as a child had the hobby of catching chickens... 🙂 speaking of myself, friends and siblings... there were kids that played basketball, baseball, soccer, football, took ballet, tap, karate... went to Puerto Rico, St. Martin, Florida, Mexico... to compete in sports events... took art classes... went camping, boy scouts, girls scouts, water sports activiites... the con might be that the good schools are often private and costly.

On the real... is catching chickens something you have seen St. John kids doing often or were you joking????

Dean - I would recommend like I do to others to read the Settlers Handbook on moving and living in the USVI... it will answer many of your questions. Spa jobs.... the resorts would be a place to look - some resorts have full spa or smaller ones associated with their gyms... you might look in the yellow pages for spas or like terms and call the various companies and see about the size of the company and whether they have openings... the yellow pages are at http://www.viphonebook.com... you won't have a problem getting a job because you are from the states if that is what you meant... might have better chances in some cases. All the best.
