Pool Installations?

Has anyone installed a pool recently on St. Croix? I'm getting conflicting information on the steps necessary to get a pool installed on recently purchased (12/2019) property on the island. If anyone has information on the steps involved and the required documents and information needed, my wife and I would certainly appreciate it!

Hope all are safe and healthy on the island!

I think the most difficult part is finding a trustworthy contractor to do it. Beyond that, you might check with DPNR to see if any sort of permit is required.

If you need a contractor reference, PM me. I have a friend who had his pool built by a reputable local contractor and was very happy with the results.

I'm guessing I'm the friend vicanuck is referring to.  I had a pool installed 7 years ago.  Very happy with install.  Crazy slope/drop off to deal with.  Dude we bought house from said not a chance we could put a pool there.  But it's here. Sports style, no deep end, volleyball net in middle, built-in table and benches.  All tiled bottom and sides. No unexpected expenses and timing was perfect. PM me if you need more info. And yes, you need a permit and a submitted design by an architect or engineer.  Even though we had all of the proper permits the only inspection we had was by the electrical inspector.  And he was very thorough.

Yup...that's the one! Certainly one of the most challenging pool installations I've ever come across.

The end result was absolutely awesome.

@kimd I am looking to put in a pool - no crazy grading issues.  Just trying to find out the steps.  Who did you use as your architect/builder?  Where did you start?

@nojo-myers good luck, something i have been working on for 4-5 months off and on.  I finally found 2 architect's, one wanted 15% of the agreed upon cost which is ridiculous and the other was were I thought it would be in the $3500 range, he also had us over to his house to look at the pool he just put in and it's exactly what we wanted, so now the game of finding a contractor.  I've spoken to 5-6 contractors, concrete guys etc.  Some won't price it without plans, some want to do what they think I should do and I'm waiting on the last one who is a GC and works with the architect and is doing 2 houses currently with him.  He was off island and should be back soon so he can give me a ball park figure.  Good luck and if you want any info, please feel free to message me, it's not an easy process.  Especially when I try to find references of past jobs so I can see what I'm getting into.

The first step is to find out any well known contractor which has adequate knowledge in construction of pool.

I realize this thread is a bit old...Is there a pool contractor that anyone would recommend?

Thanks

@k-kieper I would NEVER recommend the pool contractor that we used - but you might check with Poolworks for a reference. They had to repair the problem we had with our installation a little under a year after installation. Not sure if they install or not - but they certainly are reliable - and probably a reliable source of information for you.

rfoszcz, thanks for the tip. I have talked with Poolworks, long story, but yes they were willing to help provide some recommendations. Given this is a big ticket item, I thought I would reach out and see if there were contractors that residents on the island would or would not recommended.
