Pollen?

Another of my weird questions: How bad is the pollen on St. Croix? What is it like for allergy sufferers?

We live in the self-proclaimed "grass seed capital of the world." More than two thirds of the world's grass seed is grown in our county. For the almost 20 years we've lived here my wife has suffered wretchedly each spring through summer from all the pollen blowing around. So however it is on stx, it's GOTTA be better than here in the Willamette Valley.

My husband has terrible allergies and when we moved to Island in August (2004) they cleared up and he said he felt a lot better on island. Than some strange tree blossomed and he was back at the pharmacy. We never really figured out what it was, but it bothered me too. There are a vast array of climates on such a tiny island. You can live in an area of heavy mold or live in a desert (all on STT). One thing I found strange was seeing cactus growing next to a fern. Don't these plants need total opposite climates? But maybe they used each other? I am sorry I haven't answered your question, but my point is that you may find the climate better, same, or worse depending on where you live on island.

I was terribly allergic to the flowering trees in the spring. I took meds every day for 3-4 months. On STX - no symptoms at all.

It's hard to figure what your experience will be.

Don't know if it will help you any but "Weather Underground" and "The Weather Channel" offer online pollen and mold counts on their websites that you can use for comparisons. We have homes in Texas and St. Croix........ever since we've lived on St. Croix our allergies and sinus have greatly improved. (At least for us!)

Ric doesn't snore here -- and Ric was an olympic class snorer. Go figure.

This probably doesn't help for St Croix, but Dr Shapiro, our St Thomas otolaryngologist, posts daily pollen counts on his website: http://www.entvi.com/ and provides them to the newspaper. I don't know if the same is available "over there." 😉
