Hi folks,

Finally made it out to Point Udall today. I may not want to know, but who is responsible for maintaining? There is graffiti all over the place. No flag on the pole. Do they clean it and make it look pretty like the pictures before the tourists come?

Thanks.

J

Point Udall is one of the coolest places I have ever been. Looking out to the east makes me think why early mariners thought the world was flat.

Everytime I visit, I take trash back with me. What a thing. The property was donated, and it still can't be maintained. I do believe it is cleaned up for cruise ship calls, but that's about it.

Shame, shame.

If anyone knows who actually does the cleaning for cruise ship calls, please post.

We were at Point Udall a couple of weeks ago and I agree it looks horrible.
The brass letters that were on the wall are all gone.

Now you'd think any reputable scrap yard would be wary of letters like that, but not here!

The Mid Island Rotary Club has been trying to take over/improve the maintenance of Point Udall.

I forwarded your concerns to my contact with Rotary and here is a his reply:

In a word "yes". I co-chair the committee but difficult to do since I have been off island. The founding force behind the initiative, MaryBeth had to relocate off-island suddenly. The new co-chair is a really good guy by the name of Paul Flemming and I believe he was probably the one doing the weed wacking, unless it was the DPW crew.

I can offer that Dept.of Public Works has responsibility to maintain Pt.Udall and has given us written permission to perform "clean-ups" there. DPW has also provided RCSC with a supply of trash bags as an initial sign of cooperation. We have petitioned the DPW to allow RCSC to "Adopt-A-Spot" for routine grooming. At our request, DPW would do the heavy lifting (graffitti removal, flagpole repair, masonry repairs, lighting, trashcan pickup, etc.). I was at DPW in June/July and spoke with Asst.Commissioner Roberto Cintron and was told that DPW was awaiting release of grant monies "any day" to repair flagpoles, signage, etc. I'll need to follow-up on all of this when I return.

We at RCSC have applied independently for a WMA grant for equipment and supplies to maintain the area. I'll need to check the status of that application when I return.

Feel free to quote any of the above as I know the information first-hand and is accurate as of July.

There have been many times when unsavory types hang out there and makes it uncomfortable to pull in and stay without being on guard I guess I could bring "the dog" for some insurance but knowing him"the dog"he'd have to taste somebody,
