Greetings fellow Island folk.
Today is day 5 of my 30 day PMV. So far I have travelled the island from Christiansted westward. I am saving the east end for this upcoming week. I can find my way around both towns, Sunny Isle (although the traffic there leaves me less than thrilled), the airport, and all points north, south, and west.

After 2 days of being on-island, my bags finally arrived! Thank goodness I packed extra clothes in my carryon! I had planned to stay at Mt. Victory Camp - such a wonderful place and fabulous owners - but accepted an offer to stay closer to Christiansted with a family I had become acquainted with. Mt. Victory is fantastic if you are into natural beauty and solitude. I will stay there still - I just felt that it would be easier to locate work if i were closer to town and had more access to phone/mail services (No,I didn't bring my cell - and not sure how well it works at Mt. victory as it is quite remote in the rainforest)

Any how, I have been to the Department of Labor to register with them and actually found a couple of jobs in my trained profession that they sent my resume out on. Good luck to me!!

I set up a mailbox with mailboxes, etc. easy, affordable, and have all sorts of services available. Only downfall is they close to Sunny Isle - but they are west of it (good thing). LOL

Grocery stores - I have to say that I was not shocked by any prices. I can't say that I have bought anything that was very out of line with the prices I pay in Michigan. Maybe the eggs. They were like $1.65/doz. But i bought veggies, fruit, juice, salad dressing - all fairly close to what i pay at home. Lettuce was 99 cents a head. A cuke was $.57, watermelon quarter was $3.50, small name brand salad dressing was under $2.00. You could get steaks for $3 - $8. that was a Plaza Extra. I haven't been to Pueblo or Cost-U-Less yet. Because i was pleased with Plaza.

In response to the posts about Frederiksted, I travelled a couple of streets that I wouldn't even dream of living on - or walking down at night, but the rest of the town is fine. very sad to see so many buildings in disrepair - the architecture is fantastic on this island - but there are programs out there for grants/loans for people who are inlcined to do rehab work. especially if it is to bring a business into the town.

And remember - every town has it's bad areas. just go/do what and where you feel comfortable. Me personally - i saw probably 10 places I would love to get my hands on and refurbish. but that's me.

that is all for now. I will update in a few days. thanks again to all who have contributed to this board.

i really feel at home here. i am pretty sure when I go back June 30th, it will be to close things up and return the next week.

Linda

ps: i do know how to use my caps - the keyboard isn't cooperating! And i don't care!!!!!

Hi Linda,

My plan for the day is to eat breakfast at Off the Wall at about 10:30-11:00 and then spend the day at Cane Bay beach. I'll be the one on the purple chaise reading a book. If you're on the north shore, stop by and say hi.

Ric,
Computers from programming to networking to fixing. Office administration, secretarial. I have worked at a bar - just the basics though. I worked for Canteen Food services as a grill cook for 700 employees and worked for 5 years for a catering service cooking, running the cafeteria, and planning weddings.

I passed the Michigan real estate salesperson exam, as well as the Michigan Residential builders exam. I worked as a med tech years ago and have done medical secretarial work. I worked at the Wk Kellogg foundation in various support staff positions both in the programs department(funded program support) and the Treasurer's office for a total of 2 years.

I'm open to most anything.

Any ideas?

linda

Linda -
Glad to hear all is going sooo well! We were on STX the same week adn tried to find you - even drove out to Camp Mount Victory; they told us you had moved into town. Sorry we couldn't get together. We put on offer on a condo to buy so hopefully will be down there in a month or two, and can meet then. Enjoy and hope the good luck continues!!
