Hi, everybody --

Been lurking and sniffing through these pages for a few days, I really appreciate all of the advice I've seen here. You folks are very generous with your time and assistance.

My wife and 7-year-old son and I will be there Wednesday to look at St. Thomas. She's got a final interview there with ICMC, and if they offer enough, we'll be moving from San Antonio, TX, this summer.

We've been talking about living in the Islands for 20 years, and have made many trips to various Carib sites, but never to STT. Seeing lots and lots here about where to live and eat and such on the other islands, but not as much about St. Thomas.

What can you kind people tell me about neighborhoods there? We'll probably have to rent at first, but would like to buy after we've sold our house here.

Are the public schools as bad as reported? Do you know how much the Montessori school costs?

Who knows anything about ICMC?

Anyone have experience with kids' sports? My kid plays soccer, I saw in the FAQs that there's baseball there...

Likewise, what's the local Boy Scout troop like?

Looking forward to seeing the sights Wednesday!

Pete

I was hoping you were going to explain ICMC!!:S

Here is the link for Montessori: http://www.vimontessori.com/about/intro.html , I have several young friends who are delightful examples of the Montessori method!;)

You definitely should rent for the first 6 months to a year to see if you really want to live here. It is very different from Texas.

I don't know what ICMC is but most neighborhoods are OK & would depend on where you're going to be working i.e. if you're working on the west end, you probably wouldn't want to live near Red Hook. Bovoni/Nadir probably wouldn't be where you want to live but otherwise, most areas are a mixed bag as far as house prices go. You might have a dumpy place next to a beautiful house so you just need to look around when you're here. I live on the south side which is drier generally than the north side but since I'm up high, I don't need A/C due to constant breezes. Others prefer the north side which is cooler usually but mold/mildew can be a problem but is tolerable for those who wouldn't live elsewhere. East end is generally driest of all. The west end is most sparsely populated.

I know the Boy Scouts are active but I don't know anything about kids' sports. Good luck & I hope it all works out well for you. Don't leap into buying anything right off the bat, though. What you want to own might be totally different from what you think you want right now.

I think ICMC refers to International Capital & Management Company.

Thanks, dntw8up... it's my wife's potential new employer. I kinda figured it was a big company there and lots of people worked for them, but maybe not.

Thanks for the Montessori link, East Ender, we're looking into them. Anyone have anything positive to say about the public schools?

Excellent color commentary on the differences of the areas, Trade! I'll try to figure out where the office will be. My work is in video and film, which means I don't usually have an office outside of the house, and it's likely I'll have to travel no matter where I work...
