PMV in September... finally!
Just wanted to share my excitement... I booked my flight today for a month-long PMV this September. (Those who live in AZ may be pleased to know it was only $546 on AA.) Sure, it's hurricane season, but I've been through hurricanes before and will keep my fingers crossed and be prepared just in case.
I'll be working in the emergency department at the hospital on STX. My goal is to see if the hospital and the island are a good match for me. I'm hoping to land a full time job if all goes well (not to start until mid-2010, though).
I've read a lot here about general etiquette differences between the mainland US and the USVI, but do any of you have any words of wisdom as far as hospital care is concerned? Is there anything I should be saying or doing for patients in the ER that I wouldn't consider at home?
My boyfriend of 2+ years, a chemist who telecommutes, will be going with me. I don't think we'll have internet access in the condo provided by the hospital. Could you guys recommend any coffee shops, restaurants, etc. that have free or cheap internet access so he can get his work done? He needs continuous internet access for about 8 hours per day. I realize that might mean buying a lot of coffee. 🙂
I think I write this every time I post, but it really can't be said enough... thanks so much for all of the great information on this board!
I think it's a great idea to come at the height of hurricane season. September & October are usually the hottest months as well so if you still like it at that time, it's a good sign that the move will be successful. Best of luck.
I don;t think he can count on sitting in a coffee shop for 8 hours a day using a computer. While you are here you should check out other options.
The other problem with the coffee shop idea is all the areas where its free are sllloooow. If he has to work 8 hours a day on the internet, this is going to become extremely frustrating. Why not get a internet thing for your laptop from your cell phone provider for the month. It won't be that much extra money, you'll have better service and not the torture of sitting somewhere all day.
Also we do not have coffee shops like stateside. I think all of them close after lunch.
Excellent idea, Betty. I hadn't thought of that. He'd much prefer to stay home anyway (I mean "home" in the condo on STX, not home in AZ.) Assuming we eventually make a permanent move, we'll have internet at home, of course. Or maybe he'll like the attachment from the cell phone provider so much that he'll never give it up... maybe he'll end up working on the beach. 🙂
Yeah, on past visits I hadn't noticed any coffee shops, really... which is why I asked. No big loss, since neither of us drinks much of the stuff.
Good point, Trade. We live in Phoenix now, and we've lived in New Orleans and Virginia before, so we're used to heat and humidity, but the Caribbean provides a whole different level of it! We spent last September on Roatan and nearly melted, but we had a blast anyway.
If you can get a copy of "Medical Terminology and Associated Phrases of the Eastern Caribbean", by Alfred L. Anduze, M.D., it will be helpful. For example, when someone says "Nursie, don't chook me!!" you will know what they mean! 😉 You will need a language and culture mentor to help you with the ins and outs of the ER.
Thanks, East Ender. I would never have guessed that such a book exists. I just ordered the only copy Amazon.com had. There were absolutely no descriptions or reviews of it, but it seemed to be reasonably priced, and if there's one thing I've learned over the past 1-2 years of reading this board, it's that you guys are always right!
Since the topic was brought up about a coffee shop....I thought I would let you know that there is now a coffee shop and internet cafe open on St. Croix. We opened Polly's at the Pier last Friday, April 10. We offer premium coffee and coffee drinks, Dr. Smoothie line of fresh fruit smoothies with no corn syrup added, Armstrong's ice cream, as well as 3 internet stations and wireless access (free with a purchase). Later on this week we will be adding a light breakfast menu as well as a light lunch menu featuring 2 soups each day and various salads and wraps...all light and healthy. We also have beer and cocktails available. We are going to feature local artists and our first artist is Helen Green with her Caribbean inspired artwork. We have a great view right on the pier in Frederiksted at #3 Strand Street...located between ScotiaBank and FirstBank. Come check us out for something different that the island hasn't quite seen before!!!
Westend Guys,
I've heard good thinks about your coffee. We'll be on island in 10 days and will definitely drop in for coffee and whatever when I make my cash run to the Scotia bank.
Well, your place certainly sounds nice, and it seems like the kind of thing that would perk up F'sted a bit. And... who doesn't love Armstrong's ice cream?! I'll check it out this fall!
