Plan to Move to St. Croix in July
Hello,
I just left the VI a couple of days ago. I came to apply for a postiion in St. Thomas. I've been to STT several times fell in love and decided that was where I would like to live. I was not offered the position in STT. I was offered a job in ST. Croix. I came over to St. Croix twice during my visit once to try and see all that I could see. I was given a good tour by a cab driver. But I was still stuck on the fact that I had everything planned out in my head for St. Thomas. So in a few hours I just could not retain all the information that the driver and the locals were extending to me. I kind of just took a ride. It was a good ride, I am just a slow processsor of information.
The most inportant thing to me right now is beginning the process of finding a diverse safe diamond in the rough place for an (educator/teacher) with a small dog who will be my only family member. The most important part of this decription is teacher.
I am excited about the unknown and the change in plans. In other words I like what I saw. I just had something else in mind. I have heard the positive and the negative. Right now I am really embracing the postive and the reality because thats what is helping me to stay focused on the things I need to do. Would love to hear from anyone who can relate, direct, advise, or just want to share something positive and realistic( I prefer to use the word realistic than negative). Thanks in advance for your response.
Congrats Melody on the job offer!! I hope some folks that moved to St. Croix will chime in and give you some of their opinions, experiences!
All the best.

I also am a teacher, dreaming of a move to St. Croix. You said you got a job offer. I looked at the Brd. of Ed.s site--seems like there are a bunch of hoops to jump through to transfer your certification. I'm certified in special ed (LD & EMH) (22 years experience) & in regular ed grades 4-6 in North Carolina. Am currently in regular ed & would prefer to stay there, but special ed is always more in demand. In 2 years I could leave NC schools w/ half pay, but might need to continue to teach.
Which state are you moving from, & what did they say about certification?
Thanks!
Candace
I will be relocating to St. Croix at the end of April. I did a pre-move visit a month ago. I started the job hunt from the mainland by e-mailing my resume to several law firms on STX and STT. (I am a legal assistant.) I received responses immediately with invites to interview. I ended up with 7 interviews set up -- some on STX, some on STT. My first interview was with a firm on STX. It was also my last interview as it went so well and I was made such a good offer that I couldn't refuse. So, I cancelled the other 6 interviews. (I don't like interviewing anyway.) On the same day, I also found a very nice fully furnished 2-bedroom house for rent. Just talking to people -- letting them know my plans, I just landed a job, and voila! (It's $1,200 a month with all utilities included in the rent -- Islander, is that reasonable??)
I must say that my heart was already set on STX, as crowds do not appeal to me (STT). (I did visit the other two islands as well -- my heart belongs to STX - sweet!!).

I am happy for you. Sounds like there is lots of opportunity for you there in your field. When will you be moving? Tell me what is it that you like best about St. Croix?
There is a great deal of documentation that the Dept.of Ed requires but once you actually start talking to people the process is not so bad. If it is something you REALLY want to do, then I think it will be worth it. I am prbably going to have to find something else to do to help me financially. I'll deal with that when I get there.
I will be moving down on April 29. What I like about St. Croix is the slower pace, less touristy.
