Phone calls from the mainland (landline) international?
Hey everybody,
My fiance and I just moved to STX. We've been using MagicJack with a NJ phone number and its been working perfectly. Problem is, they're doing maintenance right now and I can't use my phone to call my job in NJ!
Does anyone know if a call from the states (cablevision landline) to STX is considered international?... if it isn't ill just have work call my landline here while my MJ is down.
THANKS!
CarJackD: Welcome to the forum. I don't know the answer to your question, but:
- Have you considered Skype? They offer the ability to do VOIP calls to regular phone numbers (vs. other Skype users) in the US or around the world for a fixed low monthly price.
- Does anybody know of a good, cheap calling card company which works from USVI to the states, which can be purchased easily by phone or internet, for people who are here on vacation who discover that their cell phone doesn't work here, and want to use a landline? Such a calling card might be good for CarJackD.

I believe it is international I was on STT in Nov for 3 weeks and had a message from Verizon pop up stating so I also returned to a 1000 dollar phone bill!

@STXBob
I use Skype regularly to call home - it works great, but really right now I'm wondering if work could call just to go over something and not get charged... I'm sure MJ will be back running (hopefully) soon.
@jsmith
thanks! last thing I need is for my job to get a bill for calling me!
With Skype calls to states are $.021 cents a minute. Just buy Skype credit. Also you can get an area code that makes it look like you are calling from your home area code.
I'm not sure I understand the original question. Are you talking about calling from just a regular Innovative landline? I do that quite often. Looking at my current bill, seems to be .07 per minute.
Calling from a land line is long distance, not international.
Actually, Cablevision considers the VI NOT within their calling area, which only includes states and PR. There will be an additional charge for calling the VI, though I don't know how much, as our cells have stateside area codes so our kids have avoided the charge by not calling our landline # on island. Our business kept Verizon for just that reason.
To jsmith, and others on STT.
If your using your cell phone (our experience on the boat w/Sprint) and on the north shore of STT, you may be connecting via towers in the BVI - hence why you get the international roaming symbol and freakishly expensive rates. We did argue with Sprint and got a credit, but it wasn't easy.
Everywhere else it's just regular cell plan rates, so if you have free long distance with your plan then you're all set.
Just tested my MagicJack and it is working fine.

If Cablevision's phone plan is anything like Comcast's calls to the VI are be free. Cablevision's web site ought to show what's free and what their long distance rates are.
