Pets/apartments
Hello everyone, I am patiently awaiting a job transfer to STT.
Here on VIMC there is info under the pets section, stating that it is very difficult to find a place that accepts pets.
It stated also that homeowner associations usually do not allow them.....is that true....even if you own the condo???
Most likely my employer will allow for a house hunting trip prior to any transfer. Would a week on STT be enough time to find a place (1 bedroom apt or condo) that would allow a cat????
Its really the only issue I have regarding the move....well that and putting him on a plane (cat people will understand).
Thanks, James
Dear James.
It's generally written in condo association rules that pets aren't allowed but there are several associations which do turn a blind eye particularly where cats, and sometimes small dogs, are concerned. That's rather a "touch and feel" ambiguity and you'd have to be here. In other words, don't let that be your first question when looking for somewhere to live!
Private landlords are the same way. Some will post, "No pets" while others will sometimes allow pets, sometimes requiring a "pet deposit" for any damages which might be caused.
A week's PMV should be sufficient to allow you to find a pet-friendly place to stay but you'd be well advised to make such a PMV as soon as possible. Seasonal employees are now coming in and the rental market is accordingly diminishing. Hope this helps, and the best of luck to you!
Sea Cliff Villas allow small dogs for owners only. Mahogany Run allows cats. Many places are strictly NO PETS, "no blind eye" about it. One problem in the VI is that people feel that the rules are all meant to be broken. I know people who have multiple "hidden animals" and think nothing of it. It is not so in well-run condominium communities.
If you have animals, you will probably have more luck in a private apartment.
I agree with STT Resident. We looked at every apartment even if it said "no pets". Once they met us most were talked into it , but none of them asked for a "pet deposit". There isn't much an animal can ruin with tile, etc. Most landlords we talked to wanted our dogs "walked" to protect their yard and wanted to make sure the dogs were quiet due to everyone being so close to each other. With a cat it shouldn't be an issue with most landlords if you just ask. I suggest you meet them and look at the place first before mentioning your cat. Good luck!
kellymac: For individual landlords, yes, that is possible. I was speaking of unbendable condominium association rules and regs.
clarification: I was talking about individual apartments. I never looked at condos because we had two dogs and that was "unbendable" as you say. 🙂
