Pets and Apartments
Hi, we are moving to St. Thomas sometime in August. I read that someone was having difficulty in finding an apartment that allowed small dogs. We have what would NOT be considered a small dog. She is a 90 lb. Chesapeake Bay Retriever. How difficult would it be to find an apartment, 2 bedroom, for around $1200 to $1300 that would allow our dog? Also what are the ares that should be avoided as far as crime is concerned?
There are not many traditional apartments in St Thomas. An apartment is usually attached to a private house, although there are some fourplex type buildings. A larger dog might be accepted in these kinds of accomodations or in a cottage, etc. Condos in general do not accept dogs.
I have to agree with East Ender... large dog owners best bet would be trying to find and rent a small house or cottage.
The norm for apartments in the VI are that they are part of the owners home- and usually this is a reason they don't want dogs - because they live there too and don't want to hear the dog barking, or so forth.
Also some landlords have made acceptions only to get burned and vow never to rent to another dog owner again... Example that comes to mind - a friend was convinced that a tenants little "hot dog" (not sure what their correct name is LOL.... would be no trouble.... when the tenant moved out the house had to be fumigated for fleas, all the wooden furnitures (legs of tables and stuff) had been chewed on by the dog some ruined, the floors had been scratched, the doors scratched where the dog tried to get out, the paint was brown where the dog had rubbed on the walls..... needless to say - no dog has stayed there since.
There exist some rentals or landlords that allow dogs - you just have to look a lot harder to find them.
