Peters Rest STX Refuge Disposal Site
Well, it is finally opened after building it nearly 2.5 years ago!
I went up this morning to dispose of a few items and I had forgotten about the new disposal area. It was supposed to have opened last Monday but it didn't. When I arrived, I noticed that the old dump area was cordoned off and a person directing cars to the new area.
It is actually really nice and seems to be laid out efficiently. They have a number of areas for household waste, one for green waste, one for bulk waste and then one for hazardous waste. They also have an area for aluminum cans. The attendants helped me unload my disposalbes but not sure if they are always going to be there to help out.
They have attendants that you DON'T have to pay or descend upon you with hand open when you pull in. I asked what happened to the folks who 'worked' at the old site and the guy told me that he had no clue. They are gone he said!
Anyway, another good step forward for STX! We are slowly but surely edging into the 20th Century!
Please drop off all of your aluminum and steel cans at the new bin site. Please rinse food from any steel cans first. The cans are processed using equipment obtained through grants from VIWMA & Diagio to the St. Croix Boys & Girls club. A portion of the proceeds from the recycled material goes directly to the Boys and Girls club toward their efforts in helping our islands youth.
This has come to fruition through the tireless volunteer efforts of the team at St. Croix Recycles (www.stcroixrecycles.org), a program under St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA).

Nice work. It's about freakin' time. Recycling in the States has been mandatory in many places since the EIGHTIES. Welcome to the 21st century, STX!

Just wait...soon those friendly WMA workers helping you unload your trash will have thier hand out just like at the old bin site. Except its gonna cost you a lot more than loose change. You think theres a lot of trash on the roadside now?
My mom was dropping off some trash yesterday & found 3 puppies tied up in a black plastic bag in one of the dumpsters (we are guessing 2-3 weeks old) the humain society said they would put them down since they are not weaned....
So
as soon as they are done bottle feeding I'll have 3 female mutts if anyone is interested, one is tan and black, looks like rotty coloring the other two are fawn (tan).. from their current size I'd guess them to be in the 30lb range when full grown.
we have removed all the fleas & I think there's free spay avalible so they will either have an appointment to be fixed or be fixed already when we are done "saving" them.

You are doing a wonderful thing. Most of my favorite Crucian dogs (friends' pets, housesits) are dumpster rescues.

Yeah. I loved this quote from the article:
"There is no charge at this time for disposing of waste at the center, [Waste Management Authority spokeswoman Stella] Saunders said." (Emphasis mine.)
