Considering move to STX from Ozarks Mtns. of Missouri. Prior to PMV female family member has requested information on "the estimated number of mosquitos per capita" and recommended pest control procedures for various insects to be encountered. Thanks.

Mosquitos "per capita?" Yes, we have mosquitos on STX. Just like anywhere else in the nation. More than normal after it rains. Pest control for your residence can be done monthly by local exterminating companies. Daily mosquito control can be done by usual methods...PIC smoking coils, OFF insect repellent, Avon Skin So Soft REALLY works, burning Lemon Grass incense has been the best repellent I've found. All methods are readily available on island.

Having been to the Ozarks and also living in STX for a bunch of years...Hillbilly your gonna have far fewer mosquitos on the island than you do in the mountains!
If the body is properly lubricated from the inside with some Cruzan Rum, there is absolutely gonna be no interference with any mosquitos, heck they won't even bite, the hate rum!

Hello there. Wind is very important in flying insect control. I live in a breezy area, and very rarely hear a mosquito (I'm one of those annoying people who never get bit anyway....so I have to listen for them). I have also only seen two flies since moving here some 15 months ago.

I asked people as well when I purchased my home, and was sent to Terminix. They have been great, and now I see literally no bugs that are alive. I do have snails, but that is due to having some 350 plants in close proximity. A few pellets takes care of them.

Hope this is helpful,

Dan

Thanks for your insightful recommendations. Here, where the mountains aren't high but the valleys are deep, I have found that a good dose of "white lightening" has the same effect on the local biters as rum has on yours. Looking forward to using your repellent soon.

Thanks for the recommendations. I never thought of the effect of wind and will keep it in mind when selecting housing on your lovely island.
