Permanent work in the restaurant field

hi everyone!

when i get down there, i will take any form of work i can get, including waiting tables. not too crazy about that line of work, but if that's all there is, i'll go for it. i have 2 questions:

1-it seems that most restaurants only hire seasonally. is it possible to obtain permanent work in a restaurant, especially one on STJ?

2-okay, you can all laugh at me for asking, but in most restaurants i've been to on island, the waitstaff looked as if they stepped out of a j. crew catalog. i have red hair and pale skin and am not very attractive, plus i'm well into my 30's. what are my odds of finding work in a restaurant?

thanks!

1. Yes, you can find year round employment as most of the kids leave in the off season or go play.
2. Not laughing. You have some competition in that field with the J Crew clones but there is always work. You might now, however, get the primo shifts at the primo sites but there is plenty of work. Being on time, personal hygiene, etc. are very important. Non druggies, non alkies, with a work ethic are always in demand. 30's not a major block either. I mean, you're not going to land a nigh bartending job at Duffy's but you can make a good living!

By the way, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

pam-

thanks for the kind words and advice. i don't exactly look like a troll, but my hair is a major drawback to being considered socially acceptable here in the states. as long as i can make a living, i should be all right down there. thanks! 🙂

I worked in the restaurant business for a long time. If you are in a seasonal area it is very rare for them to keep you on in the slow times. It is a way of saving health insurance and other benefits they do not have to provide to seasonal workers. It is ok if you put enough money aside for the off time. You also will have to plan for your own retirement. That industry is just not very good to it's workers. If you have fun doing it go for it . Just make sure you look out for yourself and plan for your retirement and diabillity.

Iris,
Most of the server jobs here don't include benefits so that's not a problem. Since the places are open year round they will keep year round staff on ... usually the seasonal kids go back to college or take off for another adventure and they will try to keep on the staff they have.

hey iris!

how are you?

you're not telling me anything i don't already know. true, most restaurants are lousy to their employees, and as far as not having work in the slow months, i'll be okay so long as i make enough during the other months to tide me over. i'll also make plans for retirement. thanks for your input. 🙂

Celeste: As Pamela said, if you are a good worker, honest and reliable, that counts for a lot. There are always jobs in retail, too. While season winds down, these places all stay open year around, sometimes with a skeleton crew. And once you are known (and it is a small island!) to be a good worker, honest and reliable, you may find other jobs opening up.
