Part-year residency
I ran across this board and thought I could float a question, and maybe there would be someone out there who has already tried what I'm planning.
I would like to buy a condo on St. Croix, a small property somewhere in southwestern Colorado, and summer in the mountains and winter in the islands. I work in the publishing industry, and I work from my home over the internet, so I'll be bringing my job with me and can work from anywhere with a reliable internet connection. My income is sufficient that I can afford to maintain two households on a small scale. At this moment I'm just in planning stages, and have no real idea of what I'm getting myself into. If anyone out there lives this kind of a life, I'd appreceiate your feedback. Some specific things I'm wondering about are tax consequenses, legal hoops to jump through/immigration issues, and the reliability of the St. Croix infrastructure, particularly telephone service and availability of high speed internet service.
I can answer the last two questions. If you are a US citizen, there are no immigration issues. It's just like living in Ohio, a US territory.
High speed, reliable internet access? Satellite would probably be the way to go. Because of the wind and rain, electricity, cable and phones are subject to outages, sometimes for a few minutes, or a few hours, or, in extreme cases a few (or more) days.
Linda...
Would a back-up generator be of any help, or are the outages you mentioned mostly OTHER than AC power?
A back up generator will work but remember you are running some pretty dirty power that way. I try to never run the computers at home or work on generator unless it absolutely necessary. Probably a bit over kill but .....
If you work it out so you summer in the states and winter down here, you miss the hurricane season. Power outages, at least here in St. Thomas, have become less frequent than they were years ago.
Many people here live part time in the states. Great lifestyle if you can swing it!

Yes many folks have generators. We have camping lanterns, a pail to dip water out of the cistern and a cell phone!?! More low-tech, but it works for us.
Seriously, if you NEED internet connection for your job, I'm sure there are ways to handle it.
Come on down and take a look.
