Virgin Islands celebrates V.I.-P.R. Friendship Day on Columbus Day, which falls on Oct. 13 this year. The Friendship Day holiday was created in the 1960s to recognize the unique relationship between Virgin Islanders and Puerto Ricans, who were at the time the largest group of migrants to the territory, particularly on St. Croix.

Dormitila Vargas, a committee member for the Hispanic Heritage month activities, said the parade will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bassin Triangle and will feature several groups, island royalty and the organization's own Janiqua Cintron as Miss VIPR Friendship and Aliyah Wattley as the VIPR Princess.

Because the organization is in its 50th year of celebrating the merging of the two cultures, they have named four individuals as grand marshals for the parade - community activist Annie Martinez: Zenaida Nunez, owner of Zenny's Restaurant; Edgardo Torres, owner of Glass 2000; and Samuel Carion, a local religious leader.

Vargas said the parade has about 16 entries, and she is expecting it to be a really nice event for everyone to come out and enjoy. The parade will travel down King Street, then head up Company Street and will end at the Christian Hendricks Vegetable Market, where there will be vendors and entertainment by Liquid Sounds Band until 4 p.m.

"Once the parade is over, we will have a few hours to mingle and enjoy the food and music in the market," Vargas said. "It's a real big celebration, and the entire community is invited."

I guess it depends on your perspective . I have a little 4 year old that talked about going to the parade for days . The parade wasn't the most elaborate , however watching through his eyes was fun .

It was also nice to run into friends we hadn't seen in awhile and catch up with everyone .

It looked more like a campaign trail, then a parade.

Did Chucky have the biggest, loudest float? Not enough photos in local newspaper.
